Semiconductor Tariffs Evolve

Semiconductor Tariffs Evolve

The landscape of semiconductor tariffs is rapidly evolving, driven by geopolitical strategy and the pursuit of technological sovereignty, primarily between the United States and China.

The focus has shifted from simple import duties to highly complex measures that include export controls, subsidy allocation (such as the CHIPS Act), and proposed reciprocal tariffs ranging up to $25\%$ or more on critical components and end devices.

This evolving tariff regime is forcing a recalibration of the global semiconductor supply chain. Companies are accelerating the “China Plus One” strategy, shifting manufacturing hubs and diversifying sourcing to countries like Vietnam, India, and Mexico to mitigate risk. This uncertainty and rising production costs are impacting the entire tech industry, and the long-term goal is to build resilient, regional supply chains in North America and Europe, creating a new, politically-driven topography for the $1 trillion chip market
