Ohio State Reports Record $1.68 Billion in Research Expenditures

In mid-February 2026, The Ohio State University (OSU) announced a historic milestone in its mission to drive innovation, reporting a record-breaking $1.68 billion in research and development expenditures for the 2025 fiscal year.

This achievement represents a 6% increase over the previous year and solidifies Ohio State’s position as a premier global research powerhouse, currently ranking 12th nationally among all universities and 6th in industry-sponsored research.

Strategic Investment Areas

The surge in funding reflects a deliberate multi-year strategy to scale the university’s research enterprise toward a $2 billion annual goal. The $1.68 billion total was fueled by significant growth across three critical pillars:

  • Health Sciences: Leading the charge is the College of Nursing, which now ranks No. 6 nationally in NIH funding. Research efforts are focused on transformative medical treatments, including immunotherapy and cardiovascular health.

  • Sustainable Energy: Major investments have been directed toward clean propulsion and magnesium alloys for biodegradable bone implants, aligning with global shifts toward a greener economy.

  • Aerospace Engineering: Ohio State continues to be a leader in the “Starlab” project—a commercial space station initiative. The university is developing the ground-based “control lab” for agricultural and materials research in low-Earth orbit.

A Signal of Public Trust

President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr., who took office with a vision to enhance the university’s “Excellence at Scale,” emphasized that these numbers are a direct reflection of the trust placed in Ohio State by both federal and industry partners.

  • Federal Support: Total federal expenditures reached $774.2 million, an 11% increase fueled by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DoD), and National Science Foundation (NSF).

  • Industry Leadership: Ranking 6th in the nation for industry research, the university has successfully translated laboratory discoveries into market-ready innovations, with 24 new startups formed since 2022.

“Our growing research enterprise drives groundbreaking medical treatments, improved technology for Ohio farmers and manufacturers, safer communities, and more effective schools.” — President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr.
