Czech Billionaires Eye Stake in Pirelli Held by China's Sinochem

Potential Deal Could Reshape Ownership of Italian Tyre Maker

Two prominent Czech businessmen are reportedly interested in acquiring part of the stake that Chinese state-owned conglomerate Sinochem holds in Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli, a move that could significantly reshape the company’s ownership structure.

According to Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper, Czech industrialist Michal Strnad and energy billionaire Pavel Tykač have expressed interest in purchasing between 10% and 20% of Pirelli’s share capital from Sinochem. The reported interest comes amid ongoing efforts to reduce Chinese influence over the Italian company as geopolitical and regulatory pressures continue to grow.

Why Sinochem’s Stake Matters

Sinochem is Pirelli’s largest shareholder, owning a significant stake acquired in 2015.

However, its investment has become increasingly controversial as Western governments have tightened scrutiny of Chinese ownership in strategically important industries. Italian authorities have already imposed governance restrictions on Sinochem’s role in Pirelli, limiting its influence over key corporate decisions due to national security concerns.

Regulatory Pressure Has Increased

The ownership debate has intensified because of Pirelli’s ambitions to expand further in the United States.

U.S. regulations surrounding connected vehicle technologies have made Chinese ownership a growing concern, prompting Italian officials to introduce measures aimed at reducing Sinochem’s influence. Those restrictions remain in place while Sinochem holds more than 9.99% of the company, encouraging discussions about a possible partial sale of its stake.

Czech Investors Could Offer a European Alternative

The reported interest from Strnad and Tykač could provide a European solution to the ownership dispute.

Both businessmen have built major industrial and investment businesses in the Czech Republic and have expanded their presence across Europe through acquisitions in manufacturing, energy, and defense-related industries. Their involvement would allow Pirelli to diversify its shareholder base while potentially easing regulatory concerns associated with Chinese ownership.

Pirelli’s Strategic Importance

Pirelli is one of the world’s leading premium tyre manufacturers, supplying products for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, motorsports, and luxury automotive brands.

The company has increasingly focused on high-performance tyres and advanced technologies, making access to global markets—particularly the United States—a critical part of its long-term growth strategy. Ownership stability is therefore considered important for supporting future expansion and maintaining investor confidence.

Geopolitics Continues to Influence Corporate Deals

The reported negotiations reflect a broader global trend in which geopolitical considerations increasingly shape cross-border investments.

Governments across Europe and North America have strengthened reviews of foreign investments involving critical technologies, infrastructure, and manufacturing companies. As a result, businesses with significant Chinese ownership have faced growing regulatory scrutiny and pressure to restructure their shareholder base.

The Pirelli situation illustrates how corporate strategy and international politics are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Investors Watch for Official Developments

Neither Pirelli nor Sinochem has confirmed that negotiations are underway, and no formal agreement has been announced.

If discussions progress, any transaction would likely require regulatory review and approval before completion. Investors will also be watching for potential implications for Pirelli’s governance, strategic direction, and international expansion plans.

Looking Ahead

The reported interest from Czech billionaires Michal Strnad and Pavel Tykač represents the latest development in the ongoing debate over Pirelli’s ownership structure.

As geopolitical tensions continue to influence international investment decisions, any reduction in Sinochem’s stake could help address regulatory concerns while strengthening Pirelli’s position in key global markets. Whether a deal ultimately materializes remains uncertain, but the situation highlights how strategic industries are increasingly shaped by both commercial and political considerations.
