Apple’s September 9 Event Could Mark One of Its Biggest Product Launches in Years

Apple is preparing for a major product event on September 9, with the company expected to unveil a new generation of premium iPhones, updated Apple Watch models and potentially its first foldable iPhone. The event will also mark the first major iPhone launch under new Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, adding significance to what is already expected to be one of Apple’s most closely watched product announcements in years.

The event, carrying the “Surprise and Shine” tagline, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. While Apple has confirmed the event itself, many of the product details circulating ahead of the presentation remain based on reports and industry leaks rather than official announcements.

The biggest attention is likely to focus on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Unlike previous years, Apple is not expected to introduce the standard iPhone 18 at the September event. Reports indicate that the more affordable models could arrive in spring 2027, leaving the September launch focused on Apple’s premium lineup.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to receive improvements to performance, cameras and efficiency. Reports point to Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro processor, potentially manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. Such a move could provide improvements in processing performance and power efficiency, although the real-world benefits will depend on how Apple integrates the chip with its software and hardware.

The camera system is another area expected to receive attention. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a variable-aperture camera, potentially giving users greater control over photography in different lighting conditions. The Pro models may also receive design changes around the Dynamic Island and camera controls, although several details remain unconfirmed before Apple’s presentation.

But the product that could generate the most excitement is Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone.

Apple is widely expected to introduce a foldable model that could be marketed as the iPhone Ultra, although the final name has not been confirmed. Reports suggest the device could use a book-style design, with a large internal display and a smaller external screen. Some reports have pointed to an internal display of around 7.8 inches, putting the device closer to a compact tablet when unfolded.

A foldable iPhone would represent a major change for Apple. The company has watched Samsung, Huawei, Google and other manufacturers experiment with folding smartphones for years, while largely avoiding the category itself. Entering the market now would allow Apple to benefit from technology that has already gone through several generations of development, but it would also put enormous pressure on the company to deliver a product that feels more polished than existing foldables.

The price could be one of the biggest obstacles. Industry reports have suggested that Apple’s foldable could cost well above $2,000, with some estimates reaching $2,500. Those figures are not official, but they illustrate the challenge Apple faces. A premium price could make the device a niche product rather than a mass-market iPhone, particularly if consumers view foldable functionality as an expensive luxury rather than a necessity.

Supply could also be an issue. Foldable displays and complex hinge mechanisms are more difficult and expensive to manufacture than conventional smartphone components. Even if Apple generates strong demand, production constraints could limit the number of devices available during the initial launch period.

The company’s Apple Watch lineup is also expected to receive updates. Apple is reportedly preparing the Apple Watch Series 12 and a new Apple Watch Ultra model. The new watches are expected to focus more heavily on performance and health-related capabilities than on major changes to their external designs.

Health monitoring could become an increasingly important part of Apple’s wearable strategy. Reports have suggested that Apple is working on enhanced heart-related tracking and improvements to its Health and Fitness applications. Such features would reinforce Apple’s attempt to make the Apple Watch a central component of its broader health ecosystem.

AirPods could also make an appearance. Reports have pointed to new AirPods models, potentially including AirPods 5, as Apple continues expanding its wireless audio business. The company could use the event to introduce improvements to sound quality, processing and health-related capabilities.

However, the significance of the September event goes beyond individual products.

It represents the beginning of a new leadership era for Apple. John Ternus officially became CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook, who is moving into the role of executive chairman. Ternus previously led Apple’s hardware engineering organization and has been deeply involved in the development of the company’s products.

That transition makes the event particularly important for investors. Cook spent more than a decade building Apple’s services business, expanding the product ecosystem and maintaining the iPhone’s position as the company’s most important product. Ternus now has to demonstrate that Apple can continue innovating while dealing with major changes in artificial intelligence, consumer electronics and global competition.

The foldable iPhone could become an early symbol of that new era. If Apple succeeds, the device could establish a new premium category and generate substantial revenue. If it fails to offer meaningful advantages over existing foldables, the launch could instead highlight concerns that Apple is following competitors rather than setting the pace.

Investors will also be watching pricing closely. Apple is reportedly facing higher component costs, particularly for memory, as demand from artificial-intelligence infrastructure puts pressure on parts of the semiconductor supply chain. Higher iPhone prices could protect Apple’s margins, but they could also test consumer demand.

The company therefore has several competing objectives. It needs to make the iPhone 18 Pro attractive enough to encourage upgrades, introduce the foldable iPhone without damaging the premium positioning of the existing lineup, improve the Apple Watch and AirPods, and demonstrate that its new leadership can maintain Apple’s innovation advantage.

The September 9 event could ultimately become less about how many products Apple launches and more about what those products say about the company’s future.

A conventional iPhone upgrade would provide predictable revenue, but a successful foldable iPhone could open an entirely new category for Apple. At the same time, stronger health capabilities in the Apple Watch could deepen the company’s ecosystem, while improvements to its chips and software could strengthen its competitive position across devices.

For consumers, the event promises a broad range of new hardware. For investors, however, the stakes are considerably higher. Apple is entering a new leadership era while facing rising expectations around artificial intelligence, increasing competition in smartphones and pressure to deliver another major source of growth.

The September 9 presentation will provide the first clear indication of how John Ternus intends to lead the company. If the rumored foldable iPhone becomes reality alongside a strong iPhone 18 Pro lineup and meaningful wearable upgrades, Apple could use the event to demonstrate that it still has the ability to reshape consumer technology.

If the products prove too incremental or too expensive, the company may instead face renewed questions about whether its next era can match the extraordinary growth and innovation associated with its past.

Either way, September 9 is shaping up to be much more than another iPhone launch. It could be the moment Apple begins defining what its next decade looks like.
