Yesterday’s U.P. Division I golf championships…
• Houghton finished second at the Marquette Country Club, 21 strokes behind the Marquette boys, who won easily as a team. Marino Pisani finished ninth, while Gremlins player Brenden Jukuri finished fourth individually. Calumet came in fifth, and Ben Anderson placed ninth on his own. With Cage Osterman finishing in third place individually, the Baraga co-op team placed tenth. View the complete results by clicking here.
• The Escanaba girls defeated Kingsford by a team score of 22 strokes at Wawanowin. Calumet came in sixth, and Lily Keranen placed eleventh on her own. Abigail Dart finished in second place, which helped Houghton finish in seventh.
Yesterday, at the U.P. Division II golf finals held on George Young’s Iron River course…
• Hancock defeated Jeffers by 15 strokes to win the boys team title. Jackson Sintkowski finished second individually for the Gremlins, followed by Bryce Hanner in fifth and Kirby Storm in sixth. Yesterday, during non-tournament softball games…
• Hancock won 14–4 against Calumet. The Bulldogs’ eight-run fifth inning effectively ended the contest. For the Bulldogs, Ella Storm tripled and scored four runs. After three scoreless relief innings, Sydney Scholie was declared the winner. For the Copper Kings, Kaydence Christopherson had two hits and two runs scored.
• Jeffers Varsity vs. Houghton JV: No report
The Copper Mountain Conference’s all-girl softball team for this year was dominated by Lake Linden-Hubbell, as revealed yesterday. The Team of the Year went to the Lakes. Even though Payton Goldsworthy is only in the eighth grade, she was selected for both Player and Pitcher of the Year. Olivia Shank, Marissa Sullivan, Becca Lyons, and Allie Corrigan from the Lakes, Jaydlyn Goyen and Keira Dakota from L’Anse, and Meg Ruohonen from Jeffers are among the local players on the all-conference first team. Votes for honorable mention went to Gracie Moyle of Jeffers, Lola Cichosz of L’Anse, Aya Keteri, and Naomi Frahm of Lake Linden-Hubbell.
Levi Frahm was chosen as the Most Valuable Player and Top Pitcher, Jeffers won all of the top baseball accolades given out by the Copper Mountain Conference, The Jets were awarded Team of the Year, and Luke Paul was chosen as Coach of the Year. Cody Turner, Chase Kinnunen, Bryson Kangas, and Trayton Helminen from the Jets, Logan Dusincki from L’Anse, Gabe Popko from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Easton LeGault from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Dyceson Drew from Ontonagon are among the local players on the all-conference team. Luis Larson from Jeffers, Tyler Axford from Lake Linden-Hubbell, Trysten Muma from L’Anse, Thomas Logghe from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Nick Amos, an eighth grader from Ontonagon, received honourable mention votes.

Last night, the Oilers defeated the Stars 5-2 and levelled the Western Conference final series at 2-2. The Rangers will host the Panthers tonight. There is a 2-2 tie in that Eastern Conference championship series.
NBA
The Timberwolves host the Magic tonight in the Western Conference championship series. Dallas is up 3-1 in that series.
MLB
Yesterday’s doubleheader between the Tigers and Pirates ended in a draw. After seven scoreless innings, Tarik Skubal gave up just three hits, and Detroit won the first game 8-0. Matt Vierling hit a three-run home run with ease. In the nightcap, Keider Montero made his major league debut in a 10-2 loss, struggling on the mound. As the extra player for the doubleheader, Montero was called up from Toledo. He left the game after giving up four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Matt Vierling struck out once more.
