NASA and SpaceX successfully launched the Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), a high-stakes flight that follows the first-ever medical evacuation in the station’s 25-year history.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:15 a.m. EST, carrying a multinational team to restore the orbiting laboratory to its full operational capacity.
A Critical Staffing Restoration
This mission was accelerated to fill the staffing gap left by Crew-11, which was forced to return to Earth a month early on January 15, 2026.
The Evacuation: One member of Crew-11 experienced a “serious medical condition” that necessitated an early return to Earth for specialized diagnostic care.
The Gap: For nearly a month, the ISS was operated by a “skeleton crew” of only three astronauts—NASA’s Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikayev.
Meet the Crew-12 “Restoration” Team
The four-person crew is expected to remain in orbit for approximately eight months, extending their stay to bridge future rotation schedules.
| Position | Name | Agency | Notable Fact |
| Commander | Jessica Meir | NASA | Returns for her second long-duration mission. |
| Pilot | Jack Hathaway | NASA | Making his first-ever trip into space. |
| Mission Specialist | Sophie Adenot | ESA | The first career astronaut from her ESA class to fly. |
| Mission Specialist | Andrey Fedyaev | Roscosmos | An experienced cosmonaut assisting in station maintenance. |
Mission Focus: Bio-Research & Deep Space Prep
The Crew-12 astronauts are diving into a rigorous schedule featuring over 250 experiments. Key research areas include:
Venous Flow Studies: Investigating how blood clots form in microgravity to protect astronauts on future Mars missions.
Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS): Researching vision changes caused by fluid shifts in the head during long-term spaceflight.
Protein Crystallization: Advancing cancer research by growing high-quality crystals impossible to produce on Earth.
