In mid-February 2026, YouTube experienced one of its most significant service disruptions in recent years. A massive global outage left hundreds of thousands of users unable to access content, with error reports peaking at over 338,000 in the United States alone.
The disruption, which lasted roughly an hour and a half, affected nearly every facet of the ecosystem, including YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube TV.
The Cause: A Recommendation System Malfunction
Unlike typical server-wide crashes, this outage was highly specific. Google later confirmed that the primary culprit was a failure within the platform’s recommendation system.
The Symptom: Users could load the “skeleton” of the site (search bars and sidebars), but the main video feeds and homepages remained blank or displayed the message “Something went wrong.”
System-Wide Impact: Because the recommendation engine is integrated across all surfaces, the failure effectively paralyzed the home screens of the YouTube app, YouTube Kids, and YouTube Music.
Partial Access: During the peak of the outage, some users reported that they could still watch videos if they accessed them via a direct link or through their Subscription tab, bypassing the broken recommendation feed.
Outage Statistics and Geographic Reach
The outage began around 5:00 PM PT (8:00 PM ET) and saw a rapid escalation in reports within minutes.
| Platform | Peak Reports (Downdetector) | Primary Issue |
| YouTube (Main) | 338,308 | Blank homepages and playback errors. |
| YouTube TV | 8,923 | Login failures and streaming interruptions. |
| Google Services | 2,694 | Minor spillover issues with account syncing. |
Global Impact: While the United States saw the highest concentration of reports, significant disruptions were also recorded in the United Kingdom, India (over 19,000 reports), and across Europe and Asia, confirming the global nature of the backend failure.
