Mbappé Penalty Sends France Past Paraguay Into World Cup Quarter-finals

France Grind Out Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory to Set Up Morocco Clash

France booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after Kylian Mbappé converted a second-half penalty to secure a tense 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia.

In a fiercely contested Round of 16 encounter played in scorching heat, France had to dig deep against a disciplined and physical Paraguayan side before Mbappé’s decisive strike separated the teams. The victory sends Les Bleus into a quarter-final showdown with Morocco, renewing one of the tournament’s most anticipated rivalries.

Paraguay Frustrate France Early

Paraguay arrived full of confidence after their surprise elimination of Germany in the previous round and adopted a compact defensive approach.

Using a disciplined 5-4-1 formation, Paraguay limited France’s attacking opportunities and disrupted the flow of the match with aggressive defending.

Despite dominating possession, France struggled to create clear chances during the opening hour as Paraguay frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side.

Mbappé Delivers From the Spot

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute.

Substitute Désiré Doué burst into the penalty area before being brought down by a Paraguayan defender. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded France a penalty.

Mbappé calmly stepped up and converted the spot kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament and his 19th career World Cup goal. The strike also drew him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

France Show Different Side

Rather than producing their usual attacking flair, France were forced into a physical battle.

After the match, Mbappé said France proved they could win ugly when necessary, noting that the team was prepared to match Paraguay’s physical style instead of relying solely on technical football.

Paraguay Exit With Pride

Although eliminated, Paraguay earned praise for their determined defensive display.

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced several important saves to keep his team in contention, while the defense frustrated one of the tournament favorites for long periods.

However, the South Americans struggled to create enough attacking opportunities and were unable to find an equalizer after falling behind.

Quarter-final Against Morocco Awaits

France’s victory sets up a highly anticipated quarter-final against Morocco, a rematch of the memorable 2022 World Cup semi-final.

Morocco have emerged as one of the tournament’s strongest teams after another impressive campaign, meaning France will likely face a far greater attacking threat than they encountered against Paraguay.

Looking Ahead

While France were not at their most fluent, their ability to grind out a result under difficult conditions highlighted the resilience of the defending finalists.

With Mbappé continuing his outstanding scoring form and France showing they can adapt to different styles of opposition, Les Bleus remain among the leading contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title. Their upcoming clash with Morocco promises to be one of the standout matches of the quarter-final stage.
