Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted a fresh wave of Iranian drones early Saturday, the latest in a string of attacks on the Gulf state, as President Donald Trump weighs expanding U.S. military operations against Iran amid signs the monthslong conflict is nowhere close to winding down.
Another Attack on Kuwait
Kuwait’s Defense Ministry described the drone strikes as “Iranian aggression,” saying the attacks hit a government facility in the country’s north as well as civilian vehicles belonging to a company on Kuwait’s Bubiyan Island. No casualties were reported, though shrapnel caused some material damage. Kuwait’s General Staff urged residents to follow official safety instructions, clarifying that any explosion sounds heard across the country were the result of air defense systems intercepting the incoming threats rather than direct impacts.
This marks only the latest in a repeated pattern of Iranian strikes on Kuwait since the war began. Kuwaiti authorities previously reported intercepting 32 drones in a single day in mid-July, and the country’s armed forces have continued fending off waves of attacks in the weeks since, with officials vowing to “safeguard the sovereignty of the homeland.”
The US Weighs Its Next Move
The renewed attacks come as the United States considers expanding its military campaign against Iran. U.S. officials said American forces were preparing potential strikes as soon as this coming weekend, though the precise scope and targets remained unclear, and officials cautioned the operation could still be called off. Trump signaled at a recent Cabinet meeting that U.S. strikes on Iran are unlikely to end anytime soon, telling reporters, “We’ll be hitting them very hard.”
Separately, reports have indicated the United States and Israel may be planning joint strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure, with bombing potentially continuing through the weekend. Iran’s military has accused Washington of “escalating tensions” in the region in response.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Persist
Alongside the strikes on land, maritime incidents have continued to punctuate the conflict. A tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, according to the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations agency, though no casualties were reported and responsibility remained unclear. The Iranian body overseeing passage through the strait indicated that Tehran-approved transits through the critical waterway could gradually resume “once stability and calm are restored,” offering a small signal that some de-escalation remains at least nominally on the table even as fighting continues elsewhere.
The U.S. has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports throughout the conflict, with the military reporting it redirected six ships and disabled another vessel since the blockade was most recently reinstated.
A Pattern Across the Gulf
Kuwait is far from alone in absorbing Iranian retaliatory strikes throughout the war. Earlier in the conflict, several Gulf states reported intercepting hundreds of Iranian missiles and drones within a single 24-hour period, with Bahrain’s air defenses downing 70 missiles and 59 drones, Qatar shooting down two Iranian fighter jets alongside several missiles and drones, and the United Arab Emirates intercepting a combined total of more than 150 missiles and drones. In response to that earlier large-scale barrage, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and the United States issued a joint statement condemning what they described as Iran’s “indiscriminate and reckless” strikes across the region, arguing the attacks endangered civilians, damaged infrastructure, and violated the sovereignty of multiple nations.
Economic Fallout at Home
The continued fighting has carried consequences well beyond the battlefield. AAA data shows average U.S. gasoline prices have topped $4 a gallon in 22 states, with drivers in three states paying more than $5 a gallon on average, a direct byproduct of the disruption to regional oil shipping and production tied to the ongoing conflict. Polling has also shown eroding domestic support for Trump’s handling of the war, with a recent Washington Post-Ipsos survey finding just 29% of Americans approved of his approach to the Iran conflict.
What Comes Next
With Kuwait and other Gulf allies continuing to absorb near-daily Iranian attacks, and with Washington actively weighing an expanded strike campaign that could target Iranian energy infrastructure directly, the conflict shows few signs of approaching a resolution. Whether the tentative signal from Iran’s Hormuz transit authority about restoring calm proves meaningful, or whether the region braces for another significant escalation in the days ahead, is likely to become clearer as Trump’s administration finalizes its next steps.
