Canada Adds 75,100 Jobs as Unemployment Falls to Two-Year Low

Strong Labor Market Defies Economic Uncertainty, Reducing Pressure for Immediate Rate Cuts

Canada’s labor market delivered a much stronger-than-expected performance in July, adding 75,100 jobs and pushing the national unemployment rate down to 6.4%, its lowest level in two years. The robust employment gains far exceeded economists’ forecasts and reinforced signs that the Canadian economy continues to show resilience despite global trade tensions, slowing international growth, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

The latest figures represent the third consecutive monthly decline in the unemployment rate and suggest that businesses continue hiring even as policymakers monitor the effects of higher interest rates and external economic risks. The report is expected to influence expectations for future decisions by the Bank of Canada, with stronger labor market conditions reducing the urgency for near-term monetary easing.

Employment Growth Beats Expectations

Canada added 75,100 new jobs during July, compared with analyst expectations of roughly 16,500 positions.

The gains reflected broad-based hiring across the economy, demonstrating that employers continue expanding payrolls despite uncertainty surrounding global markets and trade.

Unemployment Falls to Lowest Since 2024

The unemployment rate declined from 6.5% to 6.4%, reaching its lowest level since July 2024.

This marks the third straight monthly improvement and suggests labor market conditions remain healthier than many economists had anticipated.

Private Sector Leads Hiring

Most of the new employment came from the private sector.

Strong hiring was reported across industries including:

  • Wholesale and retail trade.
  • Finance and insurance.
  • Professional and scientific services.

Meanwhile, public-sector employment declined by approximately 14,500 jobs as governments continued efforts to control spending.

Full-Time and Part-Time Jobs Increase

The report showed gains across both major employment categories.

Canada added approximately:

  • 38,600 full-time jobs.
  • 36,600 part-time jobs.

Balanced growth across both categories indicates broad improvement rather than hiring concentrated in only one segment of the labor market.

Wage Growth Moderates

Despite stronger employment, wage pressures continued easing.

Average hourly wages for permanent employees increased 3.0% year over year, representing the slowest pace of wage growth since early 2022.

Slower wage growth may help reduce inflation pressures while supporting a gradual normalization of labor market conditions.

Economy Shows Resilience

The employment report supports broader signs that Canada’s economy remains relatively resilient.

The Bank of Canada recently projected stronger second-quarter economic growth than previously expected, citing improved domestic activity despite U.S. tariffs and geopolitical challenges.

Officials now estimate annualized second-quarter growth of approximately 3.4%, up from an earlier forecast of 2.5%.

Bank of Canada Outlook

A stronger labor market may influence upcoming monetary policy discussions.

Solid employment growth reduces immediate pressure for interest-rate cuts while policymakers continue monitoring:

  • Inflation.
  • Wage growth.
  • Consumer spending.
  • Business investment.

However, easing wage growth also suggests inflationary pressures remain relatively contained.

Financial Markets Respond

Investors viewed the report as another indication that Canada’s economy continues outperforming expectations.

A stronger labor market generally supports:

  • Consumer confidence.
  • Household spending.
  • Government revenues.
  • Business investment.

At the same time, stronger employment can reduce expectations for rapid monetary easing by the central bank.

Looking Ahead

Canada’s unexpectedly strong employment gains demonstrate that the country’s labor market remains one of the brightest areas of its economy. The addition of 75,100 jobs, combined with the decline in unemployment to a two-year low, highlights continued business confidence despite global economic headwinds. Although wage growth has moderated, broad-based hiring across the private sector suggests employers continue expanding operations while adapting to evolving economic conditions.

Looking ahead, policymakers will continue monitoring inflation, wage growth, and overall economic activity to determine the appropriate path for monetary policy. If employment remains strong while inflation continues easing, Canada could maintain a relatively balanced economic outlook, supporting steady growth without significantly increasing inflationary pressures. Future labor market reports will therefore remain critical in shaping expectations for the Bank of Canada and the broader Canadian economy.
