Premier Jumping League Sells Second Team for $50 Million as New Equestrian Series Gains Momentum

The Premier Jumping League has sold a second team for $50 million, adding another major investment to the new show-jumping competition ahead of its planned 2027 launch.

The Premier Jumping League has completed the sale of its second team for $50 million, providing another significant boost to the new international show-jumping competition backed by businessman Frank McCourt. The latest transaction follows the league’s first $50 million team sale announced in June and highlights the substantial investment being attracted to professional equestrian sport.

The league is positioning itself as a new global platform for elite show jumping, with plans to combine high-value team ownership, major prize money, international venues, and a more structured competition format. The PJL has secured approval from the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, or FEI, giving the competition an important regulatory foundation ahead of its first season.

$50 Million Team Sales Signal Strong Investor Interest

The latest transaction follows the landmark purchase of the first PJL team by the McCarthy Jumping Team. That deal was valued at $50 million and was described by the league as a record price for a team in a sports competition that had yet to begin its inaugural season.

The second sale demonstrates that the league’s ownership model is attracting investors willing to commit substantial capital before competitive action begins. For the PJL, early franchise sales provide important funding while also establishing a group of owners with a financial interest in the league’s long-term success.

The size of the transactions is particularly notable because show jumping has traditionally operated through individual competitions, tours, and established equestrian circuits rather than the franchise-based model commonly associated with major American sports.

New League Targets Global Show Jumping Audience

The Premier Jumping League is being developed as an international competition featuring teams competing across multiple venues. The league has announced plans for 16 teams and 14 venues, with events scheduled across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Its inaugural season is planned for 2027.

The format is intended to make show jumping easier to follow as a team-based sport while giving owners a recognizable franchise structure. The league has also announced a guaranteed $300 million prize pool, a figure that has helped distinguish the competition from traditional show-jumping series.

Every fixture is expected to feature substantial prize money, with reports indicating that the league plans to offer approximately $1 million at each event.

Frank McCourt Behind the Expansion

The PJL was founded by Frank McCourt, the former owner of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and a businessman with previous involvement in international show jumping.

McCourt has been involved in equestrian sport for more than a decade and previously held an ownership interest in the Global Champions Tour. His experience in both sports investment and show jumping has helped shape the league’s effort to create a more commercially structured competition.

The new model reflects a broader trend in professional sports, where investors are increasingly looking at niche competitions as potential opportunities for global expansion, media rights growth, and premium sponsorship.

FEI Approval Strengthens the Project

One of the most important developments for the PJL has been its recognition by the FEI, the international governing body for equestrian sports. The approval gives the league greater legitimacy and confirms that its competition format can operate within the international regulatory structure governing elite show jumping.

This is particularly important for attracting riders and owners because participation in international equestrian competition depends heavily on regulatory recognition. FEI approval also provides greater confidence for sponsors and investors considering long-term involvement with the league.

Competition for Equestrian Fans

The PJL will enter a competitive market that already includes established international show-jumping competitions and tours. Its challenge will be convincing riders, owners, sponsors, broadcasters, and fans that the new team-based format can generate sustained interest.

The league’s large prize pool is one way of attracting elite participants. A $300 million guaranteed pool gives the competition financial scale that is unusual for a new equestrian property. However, long-term success will depend on whether the league can turn that spending into consistent audiences and commercial revenues.

The PJL also needs to build recognizable teams and personalities that can attract fans beyond the existing community of dedicated equestrian followers.

Looking Ahead

The second $50 million team sale gives the Premier Jumping League another important financial and commercial milestone before its planned launch. Combined with the first franchise transaction, the deals indicate that investors are willing to place substantial valuations on the future of organized professional show jumping.

The league now faces the more difficult task of converting investment into a successful sports business. Building a global calendar, attracting top riders, developing television and digital audiences, and maintaining competitive balance will all be essential as the inaugural season approaches.

If the PJL succeeds, its franchise model and large prize structure could change the economics of professional show jumping and encourage further investment in equestrian sport. For now, the sale of a second team for $50 million provides another indication that investors are betting on the sport’s potential to become a larger global entertainment business.
