Bitwise Cuts 14% of Jobs as Crypto Industry Faces Prolonged Pressure

Crypto Asset Manager Reduces Workforce as Market Weakness, Regulatory Uncertainty and Slower Growth Weigh on Digital-Asset Businesses

Bitwise Asset Management has cut about 14% of its global workforce, becoming the latest major crypto-focused company to reduce staffing as a prolonged downturn in digital-asset markets puts pressure on businesses across the industry.

Chief Executive Officer Hunter Horsley confirmed the workforce reduction, saying the cuts were completed the previous week. Despite the layoffs, Horsley indicated that Bitwise remains focused on expanding its business as cryptocurrencies become more integrated into the broader financial system.

The move highlights the difficult environment facing crypto companies even as the industry has become increasingly connected to traditional finance through exchange-traded funds, institutional investment and expanding regulatory frameworks.

Bitwise Cuts Staff as Crypto Slump Continues

Bitwise’s workforce reduction comes after a prolonged period of weakness across the cryptocurrency market.

The company has built its business around providing investment products and services linked to digital assets. Its expansion has benefited from growing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies, particularly after the launch and growth of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the US.

However, crypto markets have struggled to maintain the momentum that followed earlier periods of strong institutional demand.

The latest reduction suggests Bitwise is adjusting its cost structure to reflect current market conditions while attempting to maintain its ability to invest in areas it considers important for future growth.

CEO Says Company Remains Positioned for Growth

Despite the layoffs, Horsley’s comments suggest that Bitwise does not view the workforce reduction as a retreat from the cryptocurrency industry.

The CEO said the restructuring leaves the company well positioned for continued expansion and argued that digital assets will become increasingly integrated into the global economy.

That outlook reflects a broader change in how large financial institutions view cryptocurrencies.

Digital assets are no longer confined to specialized crypto exchanges and startups. Traditional asset managers, banks and financial companies have increasingly developed products that give investors exposure to Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Bitwise is attempting to position itself within that transition.

Crypto Companies Face a Difficult Environment

The layoffs come at a time when crypto companies are dealing with several pressures simultaneously.

These include:

  • Weak cryptocurrency prices
  • Reduced trading activity
  • Investor caution
  • Regulatory uncertainty
  • Competition from traditional financial institutions
  • Pressure on operating costs
  • Changing investor demand

The combination can make growth difficult even for companies that remain strategically optimistic about the long-term future of digital assets.

Crypto businesses also tend to be particularly sensitive to market cycles because revenues can rise sharply when asset prices and trading volumes increase and decline when investor activity slows.

Bitcoin and Other Digital Assets Remain Volatile

The broader crypto market has recently faced renewed volatility as investors respond to inflation, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments.

Bitcoin and other major digital assets have traded under pressure as investors wait for fresh US economic data and assess the Federal Reserve’s future policy path.

The crypto market’s sensitivity to macroeconomic conditions has become increasingly important as institutional investors have entered the asset class.

When investors reduce exposure to riskier assets, cryptocurrencies can experience significant selling pressure alongside technology stocks and other growth-oriented investments.

That dynamic has made the industry’s performance increasingly dependent on developments outside the crypto sector itself.

Bitwise Has Benefited From Institutional Adoption

Bitwise is one of the companies that has benefited from the growing institutionalization of cryptocurrencies.

The company offers investment products designed to give investors exposure to digital assets without requiring them to directly manage cryptocurrency holdings.

The expansion of crypto exchange-traded products has created a major new channel for institutional and retail investors.

Instead of purchasing Bitcoin through a cryptocurrency exchange, investors can gain exposure through regulated investment vehicles that operate within traditional financial markets.

This has helped bring digital assets closer to mainstream investment portfolios.

Regulatory Uncertainty Remains a Challenge

The crypto industry is also waiting for greater clarity from US lawmakers and regulators.

The CLARITY Act, a major cryptocurrency market-structure bill, recently faced delays in the Senate after lawmakers failed to advance it before beginning a five-week recess. The legislation is intended to establish a clearer framework for digital assets, but disagreements over consumer protections, stablecoins, ethics provisions and anti-money-laundering rules have complicated its progress.

For companies such as Bitwise, regulatory clarity could have significant consequences.

Clearer rules could make it easier for financial institutions to develop new digital-asset products and could encourage more investors to enter the market.

At the same time, additional regulatory requirements could increase compliance costs for companies operating in the sector.

Crypto Industry Becomes More Competitive

Bitwise is also facing a more competitive environment.

Traditional financial firms have increasingly entered the digital-asset market, bringing significantly larger balance sheets, established distribution networks and existing relationships with institutional investors.

Major asset managers have launched cryptocurrency-related investment products, while banks and other financial institutions have expanded their digital-asset capabilities.

This has created opportunities for the industry but also increased competition for customers and assets.

Crypto-native companies must therefore demonstrate that their specialized expertise provides enough value to compete with established financial institutions.

Cost Cutting Becomes More Common

Bitwise’s decision reflects a wider trend of cost management across the technology and crypto industries.

Companies that expanded rapidly during periods of strong market growth are increasingly reviewing their staffing levels and operating expenses.

For management teams, the challenge is finding the balance between reducing costs and maintaining enough employees to take advantage of the next market expansion.

Cutting too aggressively could leave companies unable to respond quickly when demand returns.

Maintaining an oversized workforce, meanwhile, can pressure profitability during periods of weak revenue.

The Industry Is Still Investing in Its Future

Despite the layoffs, the crypto industry continues to attract substantial investment.

The development of exchange-traded products, stablecoins, tokenization and blockchain-based financial infrastructure suggests that digital assets are becoming increasingly connected to the traditional financial system.

For Bitwise, that broader transformation represents a potential long-term opportunity.

The company can reduce expenses today while continuing to invest in products and services that could benefit if institutional adoption accelerates.

The strategy reflects the industry’s changing priorities: surviving the current market cycle while preparing for the next stage of crypto adoption.

Looking Ahead

Bitwise’s 14% workforce reduction demonstrates that the cryptocurrency industry is still under significant pressure despite its growing connection with traditional finance.

The company is cutting costs at a time when digital-asset prices remain volatile, regulatory legislation faces delays and competition from major financial institutions continues to increase.

At the same time, Bitwise’s leadership remains optimistic about the long-term role of cryptocurrencies in the global economy.

The key question will be whether the current downturn represents a temporary crypto-market cycle or a deeper restructuring of the industry.

For Bitwise, the answer will depend on its ability to maintain growth while operating with a smaller workforce. If institutional adoption continues to expand, the company could eventually benefit from the decision to streamline operations.

For now, however, the layoffs are another indication that even companies positioned to benefit from crypto’s long-term growth are being forced to adapt to a more challenging market environment.
