Following their miserable defense of the 50-over World Cup title last year, England’s defeat to Australia in the T20 World Cup has left them fighting to get to the knockout stages. This has put further pressure on skipper Buttler.
- “Jos is one of my good friends,” Root responded when asked if Buttler should continue. I don’t think there’s any doubt because I think he’s an excellent captain.
- “I have no doubts about their performance; they have an excellent group of players.”
- They are fully aware of what needs to be done.
- They perform at their best when everything is set up and they have their backs to the wall, which is what they are doing right now.
- “I have no concerns at all since it can actually bring out the best in them.
- “If they perform as they all know they can, we’ll find ourselves in the Super 8s and the latter stages of the competition, where it’s crucial that we play to our best abilities.”
- Root, 33, received an MBE from Princess Royal yesterday for his services to cricket at Windsor Castle.
- Root pledged to “give back” to the game of cricket, believing it can provide youth with chances both on and off the field.
- In addition to expressing his desire for cricket to be a sport accessible to all, the right-hander, who holds the record for most Test runs scored by England, also commended the growth of the women’s game.
- “After playing for a while and gaining as much experience as I have, you become very aware of that responsibility and want to try to give back,” he stated.
- “I want to give back to the game as much as I can and try to encourage as many young boys and girls to play cricket because of the opportunities that cricket has given me—not just on the field and stuff, but off the field as well.”
- When it came to the team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Root was the top scorer.
- “It sounds quite a negative thing, but cricket is a game of failure,” he stated when asked what advice he would give prospective cricket players.
- “And I believe that accepting failure and realizing that it’s a necessary component of the sport allows you to grow, learn, and improve.”
- “I think there’s always areas that you want to improve,” he responded when asked about the state of English cricket at the moment.
