Heat wave kills nearly 50 people in India in three days

Unprecedented Heat wave Sweeps Across India

In the last three days, a severe heat wave has claimed the lives of more than 50 people across various parts of India. The northern state of Uttar Pradesh has been particularly hard hit, with around 33 deaths over the weekend attributed to the extreme heat. These fatalities included polling officials, security guards, and sanitation workers involved in the final phase of the general election on Saturday.

Rising Death Toll

Odisha (Orissa) has also suffered significant casualties, with approximately 20 people reported dead from heatstroke. According to officials, the federal health ministry recorded at least 56 confirmed heatstroke deaths between March 1 and May 30. The number of heatstroke cases during this period was approximately 24,849. However, state-specific data suggest that the actual death toll could be much higher. In Odisha, local authorities reported 99 probable heatstroke deaths in the last 72 hours, with 20 confirmed. Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, families of deceased poll staff will receive compensation of 1.5 million rupees ($18,000; £14,000), as stated by Navdeep Rinwa, the state’s chief electoral officer.

Impact on General Elections

The general election, held every five years in India during April and May, has been significantly impacted by the sweltering heat. This year’s election coincided with record-breaking temperatures, which have become more frequent, intense, and prolonged. The extreme heat poses severe risks to those involved in the election process, including voters. In Uttar Pradesh, a voter standing in line fainted due to the heat and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a health facility.

Widespread Heat wave Related Deaths

The devastating heatwave has also affected other states, including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, with suspected heat-related deaths reported. According to India’s National Centre for Disease Control, heat strokes are a “life-threatening” condition with a death rate ranging from 40% to 64%. The unrelenting heat in northern, central, and parts of western India has seen maximum temperatures hovering around 45-46 degrees Celsius for days, reaching 50 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Water and Power Shortages

The extreme temperatures have led to significant water and electricity shortages in several districts due to increased power demand. Videos from Delhi, the capital, show people scrambling for water from tankers. Many areas of the capital are also experiencing frequent power outages, exacerbating the situation for residents struggling to cope with the intense heat.

Hope on the Horizon

Despite the current crisis, there is some hope on the horizon. India’s weather bureau has forecasted that temperatures will decline in the coming days with the arrival of the monsoon. This respite is eagerly awaited by millions who are enduring the oppressive heat wave.
