Princess Eugenie Gives Birth to Baby Girl in Portugal

Princess Eugenie has welcomed her third child and first daughter, giving birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday, in a rare instance of a member of the British royal family being born overseas.

The Announcement

The baby was born on Monday, August 3, at 6:20 p.m. local time, weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. “Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal,” the palace said, adding that mother and baby were both doing well. The palace further confirmed that King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family were delighted to be informed of the news.

Eugenie shared the announcement on Instagram as well, writing that she and her husband were thrilled to welcome “Baby Girl Brooksbank” into their family. The couple has not yet announced a name for their new daughter, saying they intend to take some time as a family before making that decision.

An Overseas Royal Birth

The birth stands out for taking place outside the United Kingdom, a rare occurrence for a member of the royal family. Eugenie and Brooksbank split their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage, their residence within the grounds of Kensington Palace, giving the couple established ties to Portugal that made the overseas birth a natural choice given their living arrangements.

The Growing Brooksbank Family

The new arrival is Eugenie and Brooksbank’s third child together, following the births of sons August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023. The couple, who married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in October 2018, announced the pregnancy in May, with Eugenie sharing a photograph on Instagram of her two young sons holding a baby ultrasound scan alongside the caption “Baby Brooksbank due 2026!”

Where the Baby Stands in the Line of Succession

The newborn will not hold the title of Her Royal Highness, in keeping with the same approach taken for Eugenie’s two older children. She becomes 15th in line to the throne, moving ahead of her great-uncle, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, who shifts down to 16th place as a result. The baby is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third of her great-grandchildren to be born since the Queen’s death in 2022.

Eugenie’s Family Background

Princess Eugenie, 36, is the younger daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, and is a niece of King Charles III. Her father was stripped of his royal titles, styles, and honors by King Charles last year following further revelations about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. When Mountbatten-Windsor lost his titles, both Eugenie and her sister, Princess Beatrice, retained their own royal titles, though neither sister holds the status of a working member of the royal family.

A Family Milestone Amid Royal Change

The birth arrives as something of a bright moment for the wider family following a turbulent period tied to the fallout from her father’s loss of titles. Eugenie’s sister, Princess Beatrice, has two children of her own, daughter Sienna and stepson Christopher Woolf, alongside her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, meaning the extended family continues to grow even as its formal royal roles have narrowed in recent years.

What Comes Next

With Eugenie and Brooksbank taking time to settle into life as a family of five before announcing their daughter’s name, royal watchers will likely be watching for that reveal in the coming days or weeks, following the pattern set after the births of their two sons. For now, the family is focused on adjusting to their newest addition, born far from the traditional London hospitals long associated with royal births.
