The Mitsubishi Chemical Group company Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Mitsubishi Chemical) and Technip Energies (PARIS:TE) have announced that they are licensing “OXO M-Process,” an enhanced OXO alcohol technology. OXO alcohols are employed as solvents in the production of chemicals. The enhanced OXO-M technology minimizes the generation of isobutyraldehyde, which is used in the production of plasticizers, resins, and solvents, so removing the need to handle it as a by-product and lowering associated capital and operating costs of separation and purification.
In collaboration with Technip Energies, Mitsubishi Chemical’s “OXO M-Process” technology underwent additional research and development, culminating in the development of an OXO catalyst management system. Using this method, excellent selectivity is achieved in the production of 2-ethylhexanol, which increases the flexibility of plastic products, and n-butanol, which is an important product used in paints and coatings.
As per Bhaskar Patel, Senior Vice President of Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals & Circularity at Technip Energies, “OXO alcohol is becoming more and more necessary to fulfill the demands of the solvent and plasticizer applications. The catalyst management system was made possible thanks in large part to the collaboration between the Mitsubishi Chemical team and our technology and R&D facilities in Boston. It gives Technip Energies great pleasure to work with Mitsubishi Chemical on OXO M-Process technology and to commercialize it.
Mitsubishi Chemical’s Masaru Utsunomiya, Director of the RD&IP Division of the Basic Materials & Polymers Business Group, said, “We are aggressively pushing the licensing of petrochemical product technologies.” Our licensing business is significantly strengthened by our collaboration with Technip Energies, particularly in relation to the C3 derivatives chain, which includes the technologies of OXO Alcohol, Acrylic Acid, and DTP (Methanol to Propylene). The licensing division of Mitsubishi Chemical is expanding and helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.
