Hyperscaler Debt Risks Could Make Europe More Attractive, Morgan Stanley IM Says

Asset Manager Says European Markets May Benefit as U.S. Tech Giants Face Rising AI Financing Pressure

Europe could become increasingly attractive to global investors as mounting debt linked to artificial intelligence spending weighs on the largest U.S. technology companies, according to Morgan Stanley Investment Management. The firm believes that while hyperscale technology companies remain central to the AI revolution, their rapidly expanding borrowing requirements may create new investment opportunities outside the United States, particularly in European equities and credit markets.

The assessment comes after several years of unprecedented capital spending by the world’s biggest cloud computing providers. Companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and other technology giants have committed hundreds of billions of dollars toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, including advanced semiconductor purchases, massive data centers, cloud computing facilities, and networking equipment. While these investments are expected to support long-term growth, financing such expansion increasingly requires significant debt issuance, raising questions about future balance sheet strength and investor returns.

AI Investment Requires Massive Financing

Artificial intelligence has triggered one of the largest corporate investment cycles in modern history.

Technology companies continue spending aggressively on:

  • AI data centers.
  • High-performance computing.
  • Cloud infrastructure.
  • Semiconductor capacity.
  • Networking systems.
  • Software development.

These investments are designed to meet rapidly growing demand for AI services from businesses and consumers worldwide.

However, capital expenditures have risen so quickly that many companies now require substantial external financing to maintain expansion plans. Morgan Stanley estimates AI-related global debt issuance could approach $570 billion this year as technology firms increasingly rely on bond markets to fund infrastructure growth.

Debt Levels Continue Rising

Many hyperscale technology companies historically financed growth primarily through strong operating cash flow.

Today, however, investment requirements have expanded dramatically.

As a result:

  • Corporate bond issuance has accelerated.
  • Long-term borrowing has increased.
  • Lease commitments have expanded.
  • Balance sheet leverage has grown.

Morgan Stanley notes that the growing supply of AI-related bonds has become an important driver of credit market pricing as investors evaluate the sustainability of this investment cycle.

Investors Begin Looking Beyond U.S. Tech

Morgan Stanley Investment Management argues that these financing pressures may encourage investors to diversify geographically.

Europe could benefit because:

  • Corporate valuations remain comparatively lower.
  • Balance sheets are generally less leveraged.
  • Dividend yields remain attractive.
  • Industrial companies continue delivering stable earnings.

Rather than abandoning technology altogether, investors may simply broaden their portfolios by increasing allocations toward European businesses that offer attractive valuations without requiring enormous AI infrastructure spending.

Europe’s Valuation Advantage

European equity markets have often traded at discounts relative to U.S. markets.

Several sectors continue attracting investor interest, including:

  • Industrial manufacturing.
  • Financial services.
  • Healthcare.
  • Energy infrastructure.
  • Consumer goods.

Many European companies also maintain stronger dividend policies and more conservative capital structures than rapidly expanding technology firms.

Morgan Stanley believes these characteristics may become increasingly appealing if financing costs continue rising globally.

Bond Markets Face Heavy Supply

The surge in AI-related borrowing has also affected credit markets.

Large technology companies are expected to remain among the biggest corporate bond issuers for several years.

Growing supply can influence markets by:

  • Raising bond yields.
  • Widening credit spreads.
  • Increasing refinancing costs.
  • Reducing investor demand for new issuance.

Although demand for investment-grade bonds remains relatively healthy, analysts note that investors have become increasingly selective as issuance volumes continue expanding.

AI Still Represents Long-Term Opportunity

Despite concerns regarding leverage, Morgan Stanley does not question artificial intelligence’s long-term growth potential.

Instead, the firm argues that investors should distinguish between:

  • Strong technology fundamentals.
  • Financing risks.
  • Valuation levels.
  • Portfolio concentration.

Artificial intelligence is expected to remain a major driver of global productivity, cloud computing demand, semiconductor investment, and digital transformation.

However, elevated debt levels may create additional volatility for some of the industry’s largest companies.

Diversification Gains Importance

The evolving market environment reinforces the importance of diversified investment strategies.

Rather than concentrating exclusively in a handful of mega-cap technology companies, investors increasingly evaluate opportunities across:

  • Regions.
  • Industries.
  • Asset classes.
  • Valuation profiles.

Europe’s combination of relatively attractive valuations, established industrial leaders, and stable cash-generating businesses may therefore receive greater investor attention if financing conditions remain challenging.

Looking Ahead

Morgan Stanley Investment Management believes the extraordinary borrowing required to finance the artificial intelligence boom could gradually reshape global investment flows. While hyperscale technology companies remain at the forefront of innovation, rapidly expanding debt issuance and rising capital expenditure requirements introduce new financial considerations for investors. Europe, with its comparatively lower valuations, diversified industrial base, and more conservative corporate balance sheets, may become increasingly attractive as investors seek balance between long-term growth opportunities and financial stability.

The long-term outlook for artificial intelligence remains highly positive, and demand for computing infrastructure is expected to continue expanding. Nevertheless, investors are becoming more attentive to how that growth is financed. If debt issuance continues rising at its current pace, portfolio diversification and careful credit analysis may become increasingly important alongside enthusiasm for AI-driven technological innovation.
