Now that July 4th is quickly coming and there will be a general election, the aging tabby may become prime minister for the sixth time.
He has held the position of prime minister for the Conservative party five times previously, but if polls are accurate, he is about to have his first from the Labour party.
Along with him as he left was incumbent Rishi Sunak’s fox-red labrador puppy, Nova. Not that Larry would care.
Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty claims that there have been some “heated exchanges” between the two. But Larry has always come out on top.
Recently, Labour leader Keir Starmer told the BBC that his children treat their family cat Jojo more than he does.
He informed the publication Metro that they also had a hamster named Bear. whether he wins, however, it’s unclear whether either would follow him.
Palmerston, the foreign ministry equivalent of Larry, has often engaged in catfights to determine who is the top cat. Larry has always been a staunch defender of his turf.
Eventually, his adversary went to live in the country.
Unwary pigeons and urban foxes have also been driven away, though one feathered intruder just escaped his grasp as the media watched.
On February 15, 2011, Larry made his debut at Downing Street after his adoption from the Battersea shelter located in south London.
He was given the formal title of “Chief Mouser” after being hired by former prime minister David Cameron to eradicate mice.
But despite a few early victories, his performance in that area was far from stellar.
While reporters on the politics beat have said that Cameron is cordial with journalists, Cameron himself attempted to dispel rumors that he and Larry did not get along.
In a recent piece on Larry, the aptly titled BBC political journalist Helen Catt said, “He’s interested.”
“He tends to come up and have a look when you’re there with the camera crew, he likes to see what the press are up to.”
However, she also mentioned the drawbacks.
“When you’re in Downing Street and you’re doing lives, you’re always very aware that if he pops out behind you, a lot of people really aren’t going to be listening to what you’re saying anymore,” she said.
Larry has posted his official campaign platform for the general election on his social media account, @Number10cat.
“I have to live with anyone you elect, but I don’t get to vote in the general election. “No pressure,” one tweet said after Sunak’s May 22 announcement of the election.
“Whatever the result of the election, I’ll be here to keep an eye on things,” said another.
In an interview with AFP on the tenth anniversary of his ascension to power, Larry disclosed the key to his long life via the person in charge of his social media presence.
“The key thing to remember is that I live here permanently, the politicians just lodge with me for a bit until they’re fired,” he said.
