DeepSeek Founder’s Hedge Funds Among Big Winners of CXMT’s Blockbuster IPO

DeepSeek Founder's Hedge Funds Among Big Winners of CXMT's Blockbuster IPO

Liang Wenfeng, the billionaire founder of Chinese AI sensation DeepSeek, has emerged as one of the standout winners from the record-breaking initial public offering of memory chipmaker CXMT Corp., after investment vehicles tied to his hedge fund secured the largest share allocation among all participating Chinese private funds.

A Quant Trader’s Big Payday

Liang’s two investment firms, High-Flyer Quant Investment Management (Ningbo) LP and High-Flyer Asset Management (Zhejiang) Co., were jointly awarded 20.2 million shares in CXMT’s initial public offering — the largest allocation among more than 100 Chinese private funds that took part. The scale of that allotment underscores just how aggressively High-Flyer pursued exposure to one of the most explosive stock debuts in recent Chinese market history.

More than 150 separate private fund products managed by High-Flyer Quant reportedly submitted valid bids for CXMT shares at 8.78 yuan apiece, reflecting the scale of the firm’s participation and helping position it to capture an outsized share of the allocation once the IPO priced.

CXMT’s Record-Setting Debut

The underlying event driving this windfall was CXMT’s extraordinary market debut on Shanghai’s STAR Market, where shares surged as much as 535% on their first day of trading, instantly making the Hefei-based chipmaker China’s most valuable onshore-listed company. The offering raised roughly $8.6 billion, making it the largest semiconductor listing in mainland Chinese history and the biggest IPO anywhere in Asia so far in 2026, with institutional demand reportedly exceeding available shares by more than 500 times.

Retail investors also piled into the offering, drawn by expectations that its sheer size could produce unusually favorable allotment odds. That frenzy, combined with heavyweight institutional participation from firms like High-Flyer, contributed to the extraordinary first-day price action that left CXMT valued at more than $500 billion at its peak.

From Hedge Fund Manager to AI Pioneer

Liang’s success in the CXMT offering adds another chapter to the remarkable rise of a figure who has become one of the most closely watched entrepreneurs in global finance and technology. Before DeepSeek existed, Liang built his reputation as a quantitative trader, co-founding High-Flyer in 2015 after graduating from Zhejiang University and developing AI-driven trading strategies to guide investment decisions. He began acquiring large quantities of Nvidia chips as early as 2021, initially as what colleagues reportedly viewed as an unusual side project, before eventually channeling that computing infrastructure into the launch of DeepSeek in 2023.

DeepSeek went on to stun global markets when its R1 model demonstrated it could rival leading American AI systems while using significantly less computing power, triggering a sharp selloff in U.S. technology stocks and prompting a broader reassessment of assumptions about the resources required to build cutting-edge AI. That breakthrough turned Liang into a household name in China and a figure of intense curiosity internationally, given his unconventional path from finance into frontier AI research.

Why This Matters

Liang’s outsized allocation in the CXMT IPO highlights how deeply intertwined China’s hedge fund industry, semiconductor sector, and AI ambitions have become. High-Flyer’s continued success as an investment vehicle gives Liang substantial financial firepower to keep funding DeepSeek’s research independently of outside investors, even as the AI lab has separately pursued its own funding rounds and reportedly explored a future listing on Shanghai’s STAR Market. The CXMT windfall also reinforces the extent to which China’s most prominent AI entrepreneurs remain closely connected to the country’s broader financial markets, with success in one sphere often translating into outsized opportunities in another.

Looking Ahead

With CXMT shares having posted one of the most dramatic debuts in recent memory, questions remain about how sustainable the rally will prove and whether other Chinese hedge funds will attempt to replicate High-Flyer’s aggressive bidding strategy in future high-profile listings. For now, Liang Wenfeng’s dual identity as both a hedge fund manager and AI pioneer continues to pay dividends, placing him at the center of two of the biggest stories shaping China’s markets in 2026.
