HBO’s Lanterns arrives at a moment when audiences have grown increasingly skeptical of the superhero genre. Rather than responding with bigger battles, louder effects and another sprawling universe, the new DC series takes a different approach: it slows things down.
The eight-episode drama, premiering August 16, follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and rookie Lantern John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, as they investigate a mysterious murder in rural Nebraska. The series mixes superhero mythology with a grounded crime investigation, drawing comparisons to True Detective and other character-driven dramas.
That decision could be exactly what the superhero genre needs.
A Superhero Story That Doesn’t Feel Like One
