Hedge Fund Adapt Joins Brevan, Rokos in Opening Abu Dhabi Office

Hedge fund Adapt Investment Managers is opening an office in Abu Dhabi, adding another international investment firm to a growing list of alternative-asset managers establishing a presence in the emirate. The move highlights Abu Dhabi’s expanding role as a destination for global hedge funds and investment firms seeking access to the Gulf’s deep pools of institutional capital.

Adapt’s expansion places it alongside firms such as Brevan Howard and Rokos Capital Management, which have also established operations in Abu Dhabi. The growing concentration of hedge funds is helping transform the emirate into an increasingly important center for global alternative investments.

Adapt Expands Into Abu Dhabi

Adapt Investment Managers is a Switzerland-based investment manager focused on derivatives and cross-asset strategies. The firm describes its approach as targeting market dislocations and asymmetric opportunities while seeking relatively low correlation with traditional asset classes. Its investment team specializes in derivatives, portfolio construction and risk management.

The firm already has operations in Geneva, Zug and New York. Its official website now lists an Abu Dhabi entity, ADAPT Investment Managers ME Ltd., based on Al Reem Island.

The decision gives Adapt a local platform from which to build relationships with investors and financial institutions across the Middle East.

Abu Dhabi Becomes a Hedge Fund Magnet

Adapt’s arrival is part of a much broader trend.

Abu Dhabi has spent years building a financial ecosystem designed to attract international asset managers, private-equity firms and hedge funds. The emirate offers access to some of the world’s largest pools of sovereign and institutional capital while developing its own financial center, Abu Dhabi Global Market.

The strategy is increasingly producing results.

Major global investment firms are establishing offices in the emirate rather than treating the Gulf solely as a source of capital. BlackRock, for example, has expanded its regional presence and said it is locating senior personnel in Abu Dhabi, citing the city’s appeal and its time zone between Asia and Europe.

Brevan Howard Helped Lead the Shift

Brevan Howard has been one of the most prominent hedge funds to deepen its Abu Dhabi presence.

The firm received substantial backing from Abu Dhabi investor Lunate, which took a minority stake in Brevan Howard and helped establish a new Abu Dhabi-based investment platform. The arrangement demonstrated how local capital and international hedge-fund expertise can be combined to create new investment businesses in the region.

That relationship has helped reinforce Abu Dhabi’s reputation among global macro investors.

Rokos Adds Another Major Name

Rokos Capital Management has also established an Abu Dhabi presence.

The macro hedge fund, founded by former Brevan Howard co-founder Chris Rokos, manages more than $22 billion and operates from several international financial centers, including Abu Dhabi.

Having firms such as Rokos and Brevan Howard operating locally makes it easier for other hedge funds to view Abu Dhabi as a credible base rather than an experimental destination.

Adapt’s decision therefore arrives after several larger managers have already helped establish the infrastructure and network necessary for the industry.

Why Local Presence Matters

For hedge funds, opening an office is about more than having an address.

Being physically present allows managers to develop closer relationships with sovereign wealth funds, family offices, banks and other institutional investors.

Abu Dhabi has an unusually concentrated pool of large investors. The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority alone invests globally across asset classes including equities, fixed income, hedge funds, private equity and infrastructure.

For managers seeking long-term institutional capital, proximity to these investors can be strategically valuable.

ADGM Strengthens the Proposition

Abu Dhabi Global Market has become an important part of the emirate’s financial strategy.

The international financial center operates under a legal framework based on English common law and has developed regulations aimed at attracting international investment firms and fund managers.

That framework gives international managers a more familiar environment for establishing regulated operations.

The development of ADGM also means firms can build local teams while maintaining investment strategies connected to global markets.

A Bridge Between East and West

Abu Dhabi’s geographical position is another advantage.

The emirate sits between Asian and European financial markets, allowing investment teams to operate across multiple time zones.

For global macro and derivatives managers, that can be particularly useful because markets operate continuously across regions.

The time-zone advantage is one reason international firms have increasingly placed senior investment professionals in the Gulf.

The Gulf Is Attracting More Alternative Capital

The expansion of Adapt also reflects a broader shift in global asset management.

Gulf investors are becoming increasingly important providers of capital to hedge funds and alternative-asset managers.

At the same time, international managers are establishing local operations to capture that demand.

This creates a reinforcing cycle: more managers attract more financial professionals and infrastructure, while a deeper financial ecosystem makes the region more attractive to additional investment firms.

Adapt Brings a Specialized Strategy

Adapt’s strategy also fits naturally into Abu Dhabi’s growing alternative-investment ecosystem.

The firm’s focus on derivatives, volatility, market dislocations and asymmetric returns gives institutional investors access to strategies that can behave differently from traditional long-only equity and bond portfolios.

That diversification can be particularly attractive when traditional markets become more volatile.

Adapt has emphasized the importance of changing market structures and fragile liquidity conditions in its recent research, arguing that apparently calm markets can conceal significant underlying risks.

Competition Will Increase

Abu Dhabi’s growing popularity is not without challenges.

As more hedge funds establish offices, competition for experienced portfolio managers, traders, analysts and operational staff will increase.

The emirate will also need to maintain a regulatory environment that provides international managers with confidence while protecting investors.

Simply attracting offices is not enough.

The long-term test will be whether these firms build meaningful teams, manage substantial capital and create lasting investment businesses in the region.

London and New York Face a New Rival

The growth of Abu Dhabi does not mean traditional financial centers are disappearing.

London and New York remain dominant global hubs for hedge funds, with deep talent pools, sophisticated financial infrastructure and decades of institutional relationships.

But Abu Dhabi is developing a different advantage: proximity to large pools of sovereign and private wealth.

For some firms, maintaining operations in London or New York while adding a Gulf office may become the preferred model.

A Strategic Expansion

Adapt’s Abu Dhabi office therefore represents more than a geographic expansion.

It demonstrates how the relationship between global hedge funds and Gulf capital is changing.

Previously, many international managers primarily traveled to the region to meet investors and raise money.

Increasingly, they are establishing permanent operations there.

The distinction is important because a permanent presence can create stronger relationships and make the region part of a firm’s long-term strategy rather than an occasional fundraising destination.

Conclusion

Adapt Investment Managers’ decision to establish an Abu Dhabi office adds another specialist hedge fund to the emirate’s rapidly developing financial ecosystem.

The move comes as Abu Dhabi attracts an expanding collection of global alternative-asset managers, including Brevan Howard and Rokos Capital Management. Rokos already lists Abu Dhabi among its international offices, while Brevan Howard has deepened its relationship with Abu Dhabi-based capital.

Adapt brings a different specialization, focusing heavily on derivatives, market dislocations, volatility and asymmetric investment opportunities. Its official corporate structure now includes an Abu Dhabi operation on Al Reem Island.

The larger story is the changing role of Abu Dhabi in global finance.

The emirate is no longer simply a major source of sovereign capital. It is increasingly becoming a place where international investment firms establish teams, build relationships and develop businesses.

ADGM is central to that effort, offering an internationally oriented regulatory and legal environment, while the presence of major sovereign investors provides an unusually deep potential client base.

For Adapt, the Abu Dhabi office provides an opportunity to build closer connections with investors across the Gulf while remaining connected to its established operations in Switzerland and the United States.

For Abu Dhabi, the arrival of another hedge fund strengthens its ambitions to become a global alternative-investment hub.

The bigger test will be whether this growing collection of offices develops into a genuinely deep financial ecosystem.

If more hedge funds continue to move investment professionals, research teams and decision-makers to the emirate, Abu Dhabi could become increasingly important in the global competition for hedge-fund talent and capital.

Adapt’s arrival suggests that trend is continuing.
