Malaysia Secures MotoGP Hosting Rights Until 2031 in Major Boost for Sepang Circuit

Long-Term Deal Confirms Malaysia’s Place on MotoGP Calendar

Malaysia will continue to host the MotoGP World Championship at the Sepang International Circuit until at least 2031, following approval of a new long-term agreement by the Malaysian government.

The extension ensures that one of the sport’s most popular and well-established races remains on the calendar for another five years starting from 2027, reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a key hub in global motorsport.

The Malaysian Grand Prix has been part of the MotoGP circuit since 1999, making Sepang one of the sport’s most familiar and iconic venues.

A Strategic Decision for Sports Tourism and Economy

Officials say the renewed deal is not only about racing but also about strengthening Malaysia’s sports tourism industry and international visibility.

MotoGP weekends typically attract large numbers of overseas visitors, boosting demand for hotels, transport, hospitality, and retail services around Kuala Lumpur and Sepang. Over the years, the event has become one of the country’s most important sporting tourism drivers.

The government has also pointed to the broader economic impact of hosting global motorsport events, including job creation and local business opportunities tied to race-week activity.

Sepang’s Role in MotoGP History

The Sepang International Circuit has long been considered one of the standout tracks on the MotoGP calendar due to its combination of fast straights, technical corners, and challenging tropical weather conditions.

Since its debut on the MotoGP calendar, the circuit has built a reputation for producing unpredictable races and strong fan turnout, often serving as one of the key Asian stops in the championship’s global schedule.

Its continued inclusion reflects both its sporting significance and its commercial value for the championship.

Hosting Extension Covers 2027–2031 Seasons

The newly approved agreement will officially extend Malaysia’s hosting rights for five additional years, covering the 2027 to 2031 MotoGP seasons.

While financial details were not disclosed, previous reports suggest hosting fees have increased significantly in recent renewal cycles, reflecting rising global demand for premier motorsport events.

Despite cost pressures, Malaysia’s government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the race as part of its international sports strategy.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Motorsport Ecosystem

Beyond tourism, officials emphasize that MotoGP plays an important role in developing Malaysia’s domestic motorsport ecosystem.

The event helps support local engineering talent, racing teams, and technical expertise while providing exposure to global industry standards. It also strengthens the country’s branding as a regional leader in motorsport and automotive development.

Sepang continues to function as a central platform for both international competition and local sporting development.

Fan Base and Global Appeal Remain Strong

Malaysia’s MotoGP round consistently draws large crowds and strong international participation, with fans traveling from across Asia, Europe, and beyond.

The event is widely regarded as one of the most accessible and fan-friendly races on the calendar, contributing to its long-standing popularity among riders and spectators.

Its extension until 2031 signals continued confidence in both fan demand and the event’s commercial success.

Looking Ahead

With the new agreement in place, Malaysia has secured its position as a long-term fixture in MotoGP’s global schedule.

The extension reflects not only the country’s commitment to motorsport but also the championship’s reliance on established, high-attendance venues outside Europe.

As the sport continues to expand globally, Sepang is set to remain a key destination on the MotoGP map well into the next decade.
