In a landmark step for digital education in Africa, Mauritius Telecom, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, officially launched the “myT GPT” educational project on January 26, 2026.
The initiative moves beyond general-purpose AI by providing a specialized, curriculum-aligned “personal tutor” for students and a sophisticated administrative assistant for teachers. This launch follows a successful preliminary pilot in mid-2025 at Collège Maréchal in Rodrigues.
Project Scope: The 2026 Pilot
The current rollout is a strategic pilot phase designed to test the platform’s impact across diverse educational levels before a nationwide scaling.
Target Group: Initially reaching approximately 870 students and 170 educators.
School Selection: The pilot covers eight schools (four primary and four secondary), including:
Primary: Raoul Rivet, Emilienne Rochecouste, R. Gajadhur, and Willoughby.
Secondary: James Burty David SSS, Ebene SSS Girls, Vacoas SSS Boys, and France Boyer de la Giroday SSS.
Curriculum Integration: The platform is pre-loaded with over 50 teaching resources across 25+ subjects, all strictly aligned with the Mauritius National Curriculum Framework.
Dual-Core Functionality
“myT GPT” is designed to address the specific pain points of both learners and instructors within the Mauritian school system.
For Students: The Personal Tutor
Trilingual Support: The AI communicates in English, French, and phonetic Creole, ensuring accessibility for all students.
Adaptive Learning: It provides explanations tailored to a student’s specific grade level (Grades 4, 7, 8, and 9) and offers interactive exercises with real-time feedback.
Safe Environment: The platform is a “walled garden,” meaning it only provides verified, secure educational content.
For Teachers: The Instructional Assistant
Automated Content: Teachers can instantly generate quizzes, lesson plans, and teaching materials, significantly reducing their administrative workload.
Performance Analytics: The tool provides data-driven insights into student progress, allowing teachers to identify exactly where a student is struggling.
AI Readiness: Educators underwent intensive training in prompt engineering and AI fundamentals between December 2025 and January 2026 to prepare for the launch.
Strategic Alignment
The project is a pillar of the “Innovative Mauritius” national budget for 2025–2026, which repositioned AI as a catalyst for economic transformation.
“Implementing mytGPT Education in schools is fully in line with our strategy to make artificial intelligence a tool for national progress, accessible to all.” — Veemal Gungadin, CEO of Mauritius Telecom
