NASA Research Plane Makes Belly Landing in TX

In a dramatic scene at Houston’s Ellington Field on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, a NASA WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft was forced to make an emergency belly landing after its landing gear failed to deploy. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. local time, was captured on video, showing the specialized jet skidding along the runway amidst sparks, flames, and heavy white smoke.

The Emergency at Ellington Field

The aircraft was returning from a scientific mission when the pilot reported a mechanical malfunction with the landing gear. According to NASA officials, the crew—consisting of a pilot and a sensor equipment operator—executed a “gear-up” landing on Runway 17R-35L.

Despite the intense friction and resulting fire as the fuselage met the tarmac, the landing was remarkably controlled. Emergency crews from a military subcontractor were on standby and responded immediately. Fortunately, both crew members were able to exit the aircraft without injury, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

The WB-57: A High-Altitude Workhorse

The WB-57 is a unique asset in NASA’s fleet, known for its long, thin wings that allow it to operate at extreme altitudes.

  • Flight Capability: It can fly at altitudes exceeding 63,000 feet, roughly double the height of a standard commercial airliner.

  • Mission Profile: These planes are primarily used for atmospheric research, satellite calibration, and capturing high-definition imagery of rocket launches.

  • The Fleet: NASA operates only three of these specialized aircraft, all based at the Johnson Space Center near Ellington Field.

Investigation and Impact

Ellington Field’s main runway remained closed for several hours as teams worked to safely remove the damaged aircraft and assess the runway for structural damage. NASA has launched a formal investigation to determine why the landing gear failed.

While the extent of the damage to the aircraft is still being evaluated, the loss of one of only three WB-57s could temporarily impact NASA’s high-altitude research schedule for 2026. The agency has vowed to provide transparent updates as the investigation progresses.
