NBCUniversal Eyes Video Game Expansion After Comcast Split

Media giant is exploring a deeper push into the gaming industry as an independent company, aiming to build new entertainment franchises and unlock additional growth opportunities.

NBCUniversal is considering expanding into the video game business after its planned separation from parent company Comcast, according to people familiar with the matter. The move would allow the entertainment company to capitalize on its extensive portfolio of film, television, and theme park franchises by developing games based on popular intellectual property.

The discussions come as Comcast restructures its business by separating NBCUniversal into an independent publicly traded company. Industry analysts believe the split will give NBCUniversal greater flexibility to pursue new business opportunities, including gaming, streaming, and digital entertainment, without being tied to Comcast’s broadband and telecommunications operations.

Gaming Emerges as a New Growth Opportunity

Executives see the global video game industry as a natural extension of NBCUniversal’s entertainment business.

The company owns some of the world’s most recognizable franchises through Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and its television studios. Developing games based on these brands could generate new revenue streams while expanding fan engagement beyond movies, television, and theme parks.

The gaming market has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the entertainment industry, with blockbuster franchises generating billions of dollars annually through game sales, downloadable content, and in-game purchases.

Comcast Split Creates Strategic Flexibility

The proposed separation is expected to transform NBCUniversal into an independent media company with greater freedom to pursue acquisitions, partnerships, and expansion into adjacent industries.

Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts has said the split is designed to allow each business to focus on its own strategy and operations. While Comcast will continue concentrating on broadband and wireless services, NBCUniversal will focus on content creation, streaming, film production, television networks, and theme parks.

Although company executives have dismissed speculation that the separation is intended to prepare NBCUniversal for a sale, analysts believe the new structure will provide management with greater flexibility when evaluating future growth opportunities.

Company Has Long Explored Gaming

NBCUniversal’s interest in gaming is not new.

Over the years, Comcast has explored potential investments and acquisitions involving major gaming companies, including discussions around publishers such as Electronic Arts, Activision, and Epic Games, according to sources. The company has also partnered with Nintendo to develop successful entertainment projects, including theme park attractions and blockbuster films based on gaming franchises.

These experiences have demonstrated how games can create valuable intellectual property that extends across movies, television, merchandise, and live attractions.

Strong Franchise Portfolio Offers Advantages

NBCUniversal enters the gaming market with a significant competitive advantage through its extensive collection of entertainment brands.

Popular franchises such as Jurassic World, Fast & Furious, Minions, Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and numerous television properties could all serve as the foundation for future video game projects.

Rather than building entirely new franchises, the company could leverage existing fan bases to develop games that complement films, streaming content, and theme park experiences while strengthening customer engagement across multiple platforms.

Analysts believe cross-platform storytelling has become an increasingly important strategy for global entertainment companies.

Streaming and Digital Entertainment Continue to Converge

The gaming initiative would complement NBCUniversal’s broader digital strategy centered on its streaming platform, Peacock.

As entertainment companies compete for consumer attention, many are expanding beyond traditional television and film into interactive experiences. Video games provide longer engagement times and recurring revenue opportunities compared with conventional entertainment formats.

Industry leaders such as Netflix, Disney, and Amazon have all increased investments in gaming in recent years, reflecting the growing importance of interactive entertainment within the broader media industry. NBCUniversal’s expansion would position the company alongside these competitors in one of the fastest-growing digital markets.

Future Strategy Takes Shape After Separation

NBCUniversal is expected to remain independent for at least one year following its separation from Comcast in order to preserve the transaction’s tax-efficient structure.

During that period, management is expected to evaluate opportunities to expand into adjacent businesses while strengthening the company’s core entertainment operations. Although no final decisions regarding a gaming strategy have been announced, industry observers believe interactive entertainment could become a key pillar of NBCUniversal’s long-term growth plans.

As media companies continue searching for new ways to monetize their intellectual property, a stronger presence in video games could help NBCUniversal diversify its business, reach younger audiences, and build globally recognized entertainment franchises that extend far beyond the traditional movie screen.
