Danish technology company Netcompany has won a five-year contract worth more than £215 million, or roughly $215 million, to become the digital delivery partner for England’s national adult screening programmes. The agreement gives Netcompany a major role in modernising the technology behind some of the National Health Service’s most important preventive healthcare services.
The contract covers all seven national adult screening programmes and is expected to involve around 15 million screening invitations each year. Netcompany will operate and improve existing digital services while developing new NHS-owned, UK-built systems designed to make screening easier to access and more efficient to administer. The work is expected to include a new national breast screening service and improvements to cervical screening, including digital invitations and home HPV self-testing kits.
The deal comes as the UK government places greater emphasis on prevention, early diagnosis and the use of digital technology across the NHS. Its current health strategy calls for a shift from treating illnesses after they emerge toward preventing disease and detecting serious conditions earlier. NHS England’s public health framework specifically identifies screening as a key tool for earlier diagnosis and reducing health inequalities.
For Netcompany, the contract represents a significant expansion of its position in the UK healthcare technology market. The company already has experience working with NHS England, including the development of a national digital GP registration service used by more than 6,000 surgeries. Netcompany has also worked on digital services such as the NHS COVID Pass, giving it experience operating large-scale public platforms with millions of potential users.
The screening contract is particularly important because of the scale and complexity of the programmes involved. Screening services must coordinate invitations, appointments, clinical information, test results and follow-up care while handling sensitive patient information. A more integrated digital infrastructure could reduce administrative burdens and make it easier for patients to move through the screening process from invitation to diagnosis.
The NHS is already using technology to improve early cancer detection. In January, NHS England announced a pilot combining artificial intelligence with robotic technology to help doctors identify and diagnose difficult-to-detect lung cancers. The government has also committed millions of pounds to expanding proven AI technologies across NHS trusts, reflecting a broader push to use technology to reduce waiting times and improve diagnosis.
Netcompany’s new role will extend beyond simply maintaining existing software. The company is expected to help redesign screening pathways and develop services that can support more digital interaction with patients. Digital invitations, improved data connections and home-based testing options could make participation more convenient, particularly for people who face barriers accessing traditional screening services.
Improving participation is a major objective for the NHS because screening only delivers its full public-health benefit when eligible people take part. Government data shows that breast screening alone reaches more than two million women in England each year and detected nearly 19,300 cancers during 2024/25. Earlier detection can significantly improve treatment options and survival rates.
The contract also fits Netcompany’s broader strategy of building digital systems for governments and highly regulated industries. The company describes healthcare as an area where secure data sharing, interoperability and modern technology can help reduce pressure on staff while improving patient experiences. Its growing focus on artificial intelligence could also create opportunities to introduce more automation and intelligent tools into public-sector systems.
For the NHS, the agreement represents an effort to create more modern and connected screening infrastructure at a time when healthcare systems are under pressure to improve productivity without compromising patient safety. For Netcompany, meanwhile, the contract provides a substantial long-term revenue opportunity and strengthens its credentials as a supplier of large-scale digital government services.
