Sam Kerr Poised for Chelsea WSL Return

Sam Kerr is set to make her long-awaited return for Chelsea in the Women’s Super League opener against Manchester City, after a 20-month absence due to an ACL injury sustained in January 2024.

Kerr’s Recovery Journey

The Australian striker, who missed Chelsea’s 2024-25 domestic treble, has been training well, with coach Sonia Bompastor confirming Kerr’s inclusion in the squad. Bompastor noted Kerr’s mental and physical readiness but urged patience as she regains top form.

Kerr’s return is timely, as Chelsea face injury setbacks. Mayra Ramirez is out until 2026 after hamstring surgery, while Lucy Bronze (fractured tibia) and Lauren James (ankle injury) are weeks away from returning, having played through injuries at Euro 2025.

Coach Bompastor praised Kerr’s leadership and experience, emphasizing her value to the squad. She also commended James for speaking out on fan criticism and racism, encouraging her players to address critical issues bravely.

Chelsea, defending WSL champions, face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in a high-stakes opener. Kerr, with 58 goals in 75 WSL games, could be pivotal, though it’s unclear if she’ll start or come off the bench.

Sam Kerr’s return marks a significant boost for Chelsea, but her gradual reintegration and the team’s injury challenges will test their depth. A strong start could set the tone for another title chase in the 2025-26 WSL season.
