In a major boost for the Portland Thorns and the USWNT, superstar forward Sophia Wilson (formerly Sophia Smith) has officially ended her maternity leave and returned to training for the 2026 NWSL season.
After missing the entire 2025 campaign following the birth of her daughter, Gianna (Gigi), in September 2025, the 25-year-old forward has exercised her player option to remain in Portland. Her return marks the end of a year-long hiatus for the 2022 NWSL MVP, who is widely regarded as one of the most lethal finishers in world football.
The Road Back to Providence Park
Wilson’s return has been the most anticipated storyline of the NWSL offseason. During her year away, the Thorns remained competitive, finishing third in the league, but lacked the clinical edge that Wilson provides.
Contract Extension: In December 2025, Wilson signed a contract extension worth a reported $1 million, cementing her status as one of the league’s highest-paid athletes.
Training Camp: Wilson joined the Thorns for their preseason training camp in Santa Barbara, California, in late January 2026.
Fresh Energy: Speaking to the press on January 30, Wilson noted, “I spent a year off and learned a lot about myself… I have a fresh new energy coming in this year.”

The “Triple Espresso” era of the USWNT—featuring Wilson, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson—is expected to reunite ahead of the 2026 SheBelieves Cup in March.
