WVU Wins 4 Straight Games in Weekend Sweep

On Thursday, February 26, 2026, West Virginia University (WVU) athletics is riding a wave of momentum following a dominant weekend. The Mountaineers delivered a “gold and blue” masterclass across multiple disciplines, highlighted by a clean sweep on the baseball diamond and a stifling defensive performance by the women’s basketball team.

As the calendar turns toward the final month of regular-season play, these victories have provided a significant boost to WVU’s conference standing and postseason resume.

Baseball: Mountaineers Conquer the Flames

The No. 25 ranked West Virginia baseball team secured a massive road series win against Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia (Feb 20–22). After a dominant opening shutout, the Mountaineers showed grit to take two out of three games and maintain their upward trajectory.

  • The Shutout: WVU opened the series on Friday with a clinical 12-0 victory. Starting pitcher Chansen Cole was lights-out, while the offense provided early cushion with a grand slam from Paul Schoenfeld.

  • Series Clincher: Despite a narrow loss in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader, the Mountaineers bounced back to take the rubber match, improving their early-season record to 6-1.

  • Up Next: The team returned to Morgantown yesterday, February 25, for their home opener at Kendrick Family Ballpark, securing a high-scoring 19-6 win over Ohio.

Women’s Basketball: Defensive Lockdown

No. 19 West Virginia women’s basketball continued its pursuit of a top Big 12 seed with a comprehensive 72-40 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb 21.

  • Points in the Paint: Kierra Wheeler dominated the interior, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

  • The “Cooke” Show: Gia Cooke led all scorers with 21 points, including five triples, as the Mountaineers shot a staggering 51% from the field.

  • The Defense: In a signature Mark Kellogg performance, WVU held the Cowgirls to just 23% shooting, effectively ending the game with a 24-2 run spanning the second and third quarters.

  • Status: The Mountaineers (22-6, 12-4 Big 12) traveled to face UCF yesterday, Feb 25, as they look to lock in a double-bye for the upcoming conference tournament.

Weekend Athletics Roundup

Beyond the major courts, WVU saw success in “Olympic” sports, reinforcing the university’s overall athletic strength heading into March.
