In a powerful display of community solidarity, the Zonta Club of Alpena officially presented a donation of $5,764.77 to the Breast Health Fund at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena on January 30, 2026.
The funds, representing proceeds from the club’s 18th Annual Zonta Walks for Women, were presented by Treasurer Eileen Budnick to Steve Hand, the center’s Imaging Services Manager. This contribution arrives at a critical time, as regional health data indicates that Northern Michigan continues to fall below the national average for regularly scheduled breast exams.
Direct Impact on Patient Care
The Breast Health Fund serves as a vital safety net for patients in Northeast Michigan, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent life-saving care.
Diagnostic Support: Offsets the cost of mammograms, 3D mammography, and biopsies for uninsured or underinsured individuals.
Patient Navigation: Supports the Breast Health Navigator role, which guides patients through the complex journey from diagnosis to treatment.
Comfort and Logistics: Provides practical assistance such as transportation costs, lodging, short-term prescription aid, and specialized items like “Bella Blankets” and “Radiant Wraps” for those undergoing radiation.
A Legacy of Partnership
The Zonta Club of Alpena has been one of the hospital’s most consistent philanthropic partners, helping transition the facility into a modern hub for oncology and women’s health.
| Historical Contributions | Purpose |
| Technology Upgrades | Funding for 3D Mammography and Mammography CAD software. |
| Facility Improvements | Installation of a new chemotherapy bay and the renovation of the Breast Health Suite. |

The Road to 20
As the club celebrates this year’s success, they are already looking toward a major milestone. The next Zonta Walks for Women will take place on October 3, 2026, marking the event’s 20th anniversary.
“Our collaboration with Zonta has helped make so many enhancements possible… Their support has had a direct and lasting impact on the care we provide. Early detection remains the most critical factor in improving outcomes.” — Steve Hand, Imaging Services Manager
