Meituan Unveils AI Model Trained Entirely on Chinese-Made Chips

New Breakthrough Highlights China’s Push for AI Self-Reliance

Chinese technology giant Meituan has announced a major milestone in artificial intelligence development with the launch of its new large language model, LongCat-2.0. The company claims the system is the world’s first trillion-parameter AI model trained entirely using a massive cluster of domestically produced Chinese chips.

The announcement marks a significant step in China’s broader effort to build a self-sufficient AI ecosystem amid ongoing restrictions on access to advanced foreign semiconductors. It also signals that Chinese technology companies are making rapid progress in developing large-scale AI infrastructure without relying heavily on imported chip technology.

As global competition in artificial intelligence intensifies, Meituan’s achievement could become an important benchmark for China’s growing technological independence.

What Is LongCat-2.0?

LongCat-2.0 is Meituan’s latest large language model and represents a major upgrade from the company’s earlier AI systems.

According to the company, the model contains more than one trillion parameters and was trained using a cluster of approximately 50,000 Chinese-made processors. Meituan has also chosen to open-source the model, allowing developers and businesses to build applications using the technology.

The company says LongCat-2.0 excels in areas such as coding, complex reasoning, long-document processing, and autonomous task execution. It reportedly supports context windows of up to one million tokens, allowing it to analyze and process extremely large volumes of information.

These capabilities position the model among the most advanced AI systems currently available.

Why Domestic Chips Matter

The significance of the announcement extends beyond the AI model itself.

For years, most advanced artificial intelligence systems have relied heavily on high-performance chips produced by foreign manufacturers, particularly American companies. However, export restrictions and geopolitical tensions have encouraged China to accelerate efforts to develop domestic alternatives.

By successfully training a trillion-parameter model on Chinese-made chips, Meituan is demonstrating that domestic hardware may be capable of supporting some of the most demanding AI workloads.

This achievement could reduce China’s dependence on foreign semiconductor technology and strengthen its long-term position in the global AI race.

Meituan’s Transformation Into an AI Company

Meituan is best known as one of China’s largest food-delivery and local-services platforms, serving hundreds of millions of users across the country. However, the company has been expanding aggressively into artificial intelligence since establishing its dedicated AI initiatives in recent years.

Earlier versions of LongCat have already been integrated into Meituan’s ecosystem, helping power restaurant recommendations, hotel bookings, customer support functions, and other services. The company sees AI as a critical component of its future growth strategy.

The launch of LongCat-2.0 demonstrates how traditional internet companies are increasingly evolving into AI-focused technology businesses.

China’s AI Industry Is Moving Quickly

Meituan’s announcement comes amid a broader surge in AI activity across China.

Technology companies throughout the country are investing heavily in AI models, semiconductor development, cloud computing infrastructure, and autonomous systems. The sector has attracted substantial government support as policymakers seek to strengthen China’s technological competitiveness.

Several Chinese firms have recently introduced advanced AI systems designed to compete with leading international models, highlighting the rapid pace of innovation taking place within the country’s technology sector.

This momentum is helping establish China as one of the most important players in the global AI industry.

Open Source Could Accelerate Adoption

One notable aspect of Meituan’s strategy is its decision to make LongCat-2.0 available as an open-source model.

Open-source AI allows developers, startups, researchers, and enterprises to access advanced technology without building their own models from scratch. This can accelerate innovation and encourage broader adoption across industries.

By opening the model to the wider community, Meituan hopes to attract developers and expand the influence of its AI ecosystem.

The approach mirrors a growing trend within China’s AI sector, where open-source development is becoming an increasingly important competitive strategy.

Competition in the Global AI Race

The release of LongCat-2.0 arrives during a period of intense competition among AI developers worldwide.

Technology companies in the United States, China, Europe, and other regions are investing billions of dollars into advanced models, AI infrastructure, and semiconductor technologies. Success in artificial intelligence is increasingly viewed as a key factor influencing economic growth, technological leadership, and national competitiveness.

As companies race to build larger and more capable systems, access to computing power has become one of the industry’s most critical resources.

Meituan’s achievement suggests that China’s domestic technology ecosystem is becoming increasingly capable of supporting frontier AI development.

What This Means for the Semiconductor Industry

The announcement also highlights the growing importance of China’s domestic semiconductor sector.

Companies producing AI processors, accelerators, and advanced computing hardware stand to benefit as demand for local technology continues to rise. Successful deployments of large-scale AI models may encourage additional investment in Chinese chipmakers and supporting infrastructure providers.

If more companies demonstrate the ability to train advanced AI systems using domestic hardware, it could reshape competitive dynamics within the global semiconductor market.

The development may also encourage further innovation among Chinese chip manufacturers seeking to close the gap with international competitors.

Looking Ahead

Meituan’s launch of LongCat-2.0 represents more than just the release of another AI model. It serves as a demonstration of China’s growing ability to develop advanced artificial intelligence systems using domestic technology and infrastructure.

The combination of a trillion-parameter model, open-source availability, and Chinese-made chip infrastructure highlights how rapidly the country’s AI ecosystem is evolving. As competition intensifies and demand for computing power continues to increase, technological self-sufficiency is likely to become an even more important strategic priority.

For Meituan, the announcement strengthens its position as an emerging AI player. For China, it provides another indication that the country’s ambitions to build a globally competitive AI industry are continuing to gain momentum.
