Trump, Netanyahu Meet at White House as US Dials Back Iran Threats

Trump, Netanyahu Meet at White House as US Dials Back Iran Threats

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a “productive” 90-minute meeting at the White House on Tuesday focused on the ongoing war with Iran, with Washington notably softening its rhetoric even as the underlying conflict shows little sign of reaching a resolution.

A Meeting Free of Public Friction

The sit-down came at a moment of unusual strain in the two leaders’ relationship, following weeks of visible tension. It marked their first face-to-face meeting since reports emerged that Trump had privately described Netanyahu as “f—ing crazy” during a heated phone call, a characterization Trump later confirmed was accurate, saying he had grown frustrated with the Israeli leader’s continued conflict with Lebanon. Despite that backdrop, both sides described Tuesday’s meeting as positive, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt calling it “positive and productive,” while Netanyahu shared photos of the Oval Office sit-down that also included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Speaking afterward, Trump acknowledged some daylight remained between the two leaders on how to handle Iran, saying, “We have a little difference, but pretty close,” while emphasizing a shared goal: “We have a mutual understanding that the goal is to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”

A Notable Shift in Tone

The meeting arrived alongside a broader softening in the Trump administration’s public posture toward Iran, even as the war launched in late February continues to drag on well past initial expectations. Earlier in the week, Trump told Israel’s News 12 that Washington was engaged in “deep talks” with Tehran, warning that “if they are not successful, we will return to powerful military action,” but signaling a clear preference for a diplomatic resolution over further strikes. Iran, for its part, has publicly denied being engaged in direct negotiations with Washington, with a foreign ministry spokesman in Tehran describing reports of talks as “fabricated” and insisting the government’s current focus remained on defense rather than diplomacy.

Following the White House meeting, an Israeli spokesman said Netanyahu backed whatever path Trump chose to pursue with Iran, saying the matter could be “taken care of the easy way — through negotiations, which everyone would prefer — or the hard way.”

Notable Absences From the Agenda

According to Israeli officials briefed on the meeting, several sensitive topics did not come up during the discussion. The prospect of the United States selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, a move Israel has opposed, reportedly was not raised, nor was the future of Iran’s suspected Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site, which both Washington and Israel believe may be linked to Tehran’s nuclear program and which Trump has previously threatened to target militarily. Israeli communications director Tzipi Hotovely also said Trump did not press Netanyahu to accelerate operations in Gaza or to withdraw Israeli troops from Lebanon during the discussion.

Timing and Political Context

Netanyahu’s visit to Washington coincided with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime and outspoken Iran hawk, adding a somber backdrop to the trip. The meeting also came at a politically delicate moment for Netanyahu domestically, as public support in Israel for the war he championed and helped launch alongside the United States has softened considerably the longer the conflict has dragged on without a clear resolution.

Regional Developments Continue in Parallel

Even as talks in Washington unfolded, diplomatic efforts elsewhere in the region continued moving forward. Negotiators representing Iran and Oman have reportedly been working on an agreement aimed at restoring substantial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that has been repeatedly disrupted amid the broader conflict and remains central to global oil markets.

What Comes Next

With Trump signaling a preference for negotiation while keeping the threat of renewed military action in reserve, and with Iran publicly downplaying any active diplomatic engagement, the path toward de-escalation remains uncertain. How quickly, if at all, talks between Washington and Tehran progress in the coming weeks is likely to shape not only the future of the broader Iran war but also the durability of the increasingly complicated relationship between Trump and Netanyahu.
