According to insiders, TikTok is building a US version of the app’s main algorithm

According to people with firsthand knowledge of the project, TikTok is developing a clone of its recommendation algorithm for its 170 million American users. This move could lead to a version of TikTok that runs independently of its Chinese parent, ByteDance and is more acceptable to US lawmakers who wish to ban the app.

Why is There a Push for a Separate TikTok Algorithm?

A bill to compel the sale of TikTok’s American operations gained traction in Congress earlier this year. ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, ordered the division of the source code late last year, preceding the bill’s enactment in April. The separation of the code could pave the way for a spinoff of the U.S. assets, although there are currently no plans to do so.

What Has TikTok’s Response Been?

TikTok has previously stated that it had no intention of selling its U.S. holdings and that doing so would be impractical. Initially, TikTok declined to comment on the development. However, following the publication of the news, TikTok’s American operations stated on its social media platform X: “The Reuters story published today is misleading and factually inaccurate,” without specifying what was inaccurate.

What Does the Federal Lawsuit Say?

TikTok’s federal lawsuit argues that it is “simply not possible—commercially, technologically, or legally—for TikTok to carry out the ‘qualified divestiture’ required by the Act to continue functioning in the United States. And most definitely not in the 270 days that the Act stipulates.” A U.S. appeals court has established an expedited timeline to review the legal objections to the new law.

Why is TikTok Taking These Measures?

The previously undisclosed strategy shows the extent to which TikTok is willing to mitigate the bipartisan political risk it faces. It also offers a unique glimpse into what a technological separation of the company’s U.S. operations might entail.

What Makes TikTok’s Recommendation Engine Successful?

The success of TikTok’s recommendation engine, which tailors each user’s content feed based on their engagement, has been a significant factor in the platform’s popularity. ByteDance credits this algorithm with the success of TikTok.

Why is TikTok developing a separate algorithm for American users?
To mitigate political risk and comply with U.S. legislative demands for greater independence from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

What challenges does TikTok face in separating its algorithm?
Technological, commercial, and legal challenges, as outlined in TikTok’s federal lawsuit, argue against the feasibility of a qualified divestiture within the stipulated timeframe.

How does the recommendation engine contribute to TikTok’s success?
The recommendation engine tailors content feeds based on user engagement, which has been a significant factor in TikTok’s popularity and success.
