“Everyman” hero Eddie Murphy makes a comeback in the “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel

"The movie is really about this father reconciling with his daughter," Murphy said. "After including it, everything came into place. That serves as the cohesive element of the whole film."

“Everyman” hero Eddie Murphy makes a comeback in the “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel

Written by Rollo Ross

  • Reuters, Los Angeles: – Eddie Murphy is returning to the role of “every man” after almost a decade of superheroes rescuing the world in motion pictures.
  • In “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” a new entry in the action comedy series that made its debut forty years ago in 1984, Murphy reprises his role as Axel Foley. On Wednesday, the film debuts on Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX).
  • “For 10-15 years, everything was CG (computer-generated), big visual effects and superheroes and people saving the day wearing capes and tight suits,” Murphy said in a recent interview.
  • “I knew eventually it would have to get back to this,” he said. “It used to be stuff was character-driven and story-driven and that’s going to always work.”
  • In the newest movie, the witty When Foley finds out that his estranged daughter is in danger in Beverly Hills, he gets employed as a detective in Detroit. He goes back to the city to get back in touch with her and assist with a case.
  • Foley, according to Murphy, “is not Superman.” “He embodies every male, every person who defies social conventions. He sounds like the type of person you should grab a drink with.”
  • The film, the first in the series and the fourth since 1994, attempts to recreate the appearance and atmosphere of the first film without the use of contemporary special effects. Real-life stunts are used to set the action, including a terrifying helicopter pursuit over Los Angeles.
  • “What was more difficult was all the physical stuff,” Murphy said. “I’m in my 60s now and I did the first one (at) 21 years old, so you can imagine the differences.”
  • Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, who previously starred in the movie, return. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon are among the newcomers.
  • Bacon praised the film’s traditional stunts, stating that he thought computer-generated effects were a difficult way to wow modern viewers.
  • “If you put a truck driving and it knocks the door off a cop car, and you see Joe in the middle saying ‘there’s no seatbelt’, that’s like, to me, that’s a wow,” Bacon said.
  • “That’s much more satisfying, I think, for people now because I think we’re just kind of numb to all the other stuff.”
  • Murphy said that although efforts had been made over the years to bring the series back, none of the screenplays had the “emotional hook” that the plot between Foley and his grown daughter had.

Is NFLX, the industry leader, up against fresh obstacles?

  • Many investors are hesitant to increase their stock investments in 2024 due to the increasing values. Not sure what to buy next? Gain access to our tested portfolios and identify prospects with great potential.
