Family rivalry: Prince Harry’s “green-eyed monster” claims are refuted

Prince William’s supposed continuous conflict with their father provided an intriguing side story to Prince Harry’s memoir, which revolved around the reality about his complicated relationship with his brother.

For the first time, Spare provided an intimate look into the complexities of the family’s ecosystem, which was reportedly frequently upended by problems with popularity, public perception, and media attention.

One of Harry’s most disparaging remarks suggested that Charles would get quite irritated if his work was eclipsed by that of his junior royal heirs, such as his sons and their spouses.

Omid Scobie, a royal novelist, returned to this issue in his book Endgame published late last year. The book quoted sources indicating that William occasionally viewed his father as “incompetent” and depicted Charles as growing enraged by his son’s “effrontery.”

According to a person close to Charles, “William, or his staff, I should say, will always be quick to play up his efforts.”

“Despite an entire generation preceding, there is a nearly mad rush for William to be viewed as suited for the throne.”

Nobody looks very well when they are jealous. It was a really bad look on the then-future King of England and his two children.

But after eighteen months, a high-profile incident has occurred that suggests either Harry misinterpreted the circumstances at the time or that a significant change has taken place (or both).

Instead of attempting to keep his successor perpetually behind him, the King brought Prince William—possibly his greatest asset—onto the international scene for the D-Day remembrance ceremonies in France.

William took over for Charles, who, according to the UK Times, is “adapting” his workload while he continues his cancer treatment. On Thursday, Charles went to an event in Normandy before returning home.

The choice was made after “careful consideration,” according to a friend of the King who informed the publication that Charles had already completed “the heavy lifting in the morning” and that “his heir was there to honor veterans later in his absence.”

Within the delicate limits of royal life as Harry understood it, however, the photo op alone—of the handsome heir apparent looking every inch the statesman as he took his place among world leaders, including three presidents—would have been unimaginable.

“Spare,” Prince Harry’s memoir, talked about the complexities of the royal family from personal experience.

Harry had written about a particular occurrence from a few years ago in his memoir, in which it was found that Charles and Kate had appointments on the same day. The duke stated that Kate was told not to pose with a tennis racquet because it would hurt Charles’s chances of being featured on the top page. Originally, Charles’ team had instructed her to cancel hers, but it was too late.

Harry declared, “Under no circumstances could that be tolerated.”

That’s correct, it was forbidden to post a photo of Kate with sporting equipment because of concerns that it would draw too much attention.

And now here we are:

The Prince and Princess of Wales are without a doubt the most glamorous members of the dwindling royal family. William has taken on a large portion of the credit for the palace’s successful PR campaign as Kate has been absent from public life while undergoing preventive treatment for cancer.

Royal insiders have already discussed the difficulties in juggling William and Charles’ schedules and the episodes of “green-eyed monster” that have occurred when the younger royals are highlighted in the media, according to the Times.

That’s pretty much exactly what Harry said in his fiery autobiography.

A royal acquaintance allegedly told the Times, “If there was ever a green-eyed monster or a sense of rivalry between the two, that is a chapter of the past.”

However, in a startling irony, it seems that the media storm that the Duke of Sussex’s numerous exposures inflicted upon the House of Windsor—including the revelation of internal jealousies—has also served to strengthen the bond between the King and William.

According to a royal acquaintance who spoke to the Times, “If there was ever a green-eyed monster or a sense of rivalry between the two, that is a chapter of the past.”

“On family matters and increasingly in carrying out the duties of nation and state, the King views his son as a useful ally.”

The insider also made a suggestion that Charles’s elevation to the throne has changed his perspective.

“Counting column inches is not something you do as a monarch. You’re considering carrying out your duties for your nation as “the family,” not just as King Charles.

William “very much wants to support” the King with “everything he is going through” because his father is still suffering from cancer, his wife is getting treatment, and his role as the successor to the throne is becoming more and more important.
