Meta is taking its artificial-intelligence strategy a step beyond chatbots with the launch of Muse, a personal AI agent designed not merely to answer questions but to carry out tasks on behalf of users. The company says Muse can manage everyday activities such as email, travel planning, shopping and long-term goals, marking a major push by Meta to make autonomous AI part of consumers’ daily lives.
Muse is initially rolling out in the United States for adults through a dedicated app, WhatsApp and the web, with Meta planning to bring the technology to its AI glasses. Unlike conventional assistants that typically wait for users to provide instructions at every step, Muse can develop a plan, browse the internet, fill out forms and continue working after a user closes the application. It can return when a decision or approval is required.
The system is powered by Muse Spark, Meta’s latest AI model for agentic work. The company has been steadily improving Muse Spark throughout 2026, with the latest 1.3 version designed to handle longer tasks, coordinate multiple workflows and better recognize when an action is consequential. Meta says the model also uses fewer tool calls and tokens for some coding tasks while improving resistance to adversarial inputs and prompt injection.
One of Muse’s defining features is its ability to connect AI with a user’s existing digital life. Depending on permissions, the agent can work with email, calendars and other services, allowing it to transform a simple request into a series of actions. A user could ask it to arrange a trip, send an email or shop for an item rather than manually completing each step. Meta also says Muse can remember personal preferences and use information mentioned previously to make recommendations without being prompted again.
Shopping is another important part of the strategy. Meta says Muse can complete purchases through Stripe’s Link system, with a one-time-use card designed to prevent the agent from exposing a user’s actual payment-card information. Purchases and other sensitive actions can require explicit user approval, giving people a checkpoint before the agent commits to an irreversible decision.
The company is placing unusually heavy emphasis on security because an agent that can act autonomously creates risks that conventional chatbots do not. Meta has built Muse around a dedicated virtual machine that houses the agent and the user’s data. A separate supervisory system called Sentinel controls whether Muse can reach the internet, while users can determine which applications Muse can access and what permissions it receives.
Meta says users can disconnect services, change permissions and instruct Muse to forget information. They can also opt out of having their interactions used to train Meta’s AI models. Later this year, the company plans to introduce a Confidential VM in which the entire virtual machine, including user data and conversations, will be encrypted using a key controlled by the user.
Those safeguards will be crucial because autonomous agents create a much larger trust problem than systems that simply generate text. Reuters reported that internal testing of Meta’s agent revealed concerns including disconnections, unintended data uploads and security flaws involving personal information. Meta delayed the broader release while adding security measures and says Muse now meets its safety and privacy standards.
The launch also represents a strategic bet for Meta. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has increasingly described the company’s objective as delivering “personal superintelligence” to consumers rather than simply building another general-purpose chatbot. Muse is intended to become a persistent digital assistant that understands an individual’s preferences, manages tasks and gradually becomes more useful through continued interaction.
Competition is intensifying. OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are also pursuing increasingly capable AI agents, while Meta is attempting to differentiate itself through the enormous consumer reach of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and its hardware ecosystem. The company already expanded Meta AI’s ability to plan and execute tasks in July, making Muse a more autonomous continuation of that strategy.
The commercial opportunity is potentially enormous, but so is the challenge. An AI that can read email, make purchases and act across multiple services must earn a level of trust that users have historically been reluctant to give technology companies. Meta’s history of privacy controversies makes that hurdle particularly significant.
Muse therefore represents more than another AI product launch. It is a test of whether consumers are ready to hand increasingly large portions of their digital lives to autonomous software. If Meta succeeds, the relationship between people and AI could shift from asking machines for answers to delegating real-world responsibilities to them. If users remain uncomfortable with giving an AI that much access, Muse could instead demonstrate that technological capability alone is not enough to make personal AI agents mainstream.
