Chinese technology giant increases stock repurchases as investors await stronger returns from its massive artificial intelligence investments amid a prolonged share price slump.
Tencent Holdings has significantly increased its share buyback program after a sharp decline in its stock price erased approximately $309 billion in market value since its peak in October 2025. The Chinese technology giant has been repurchasing shares almost every trading day since mid-May, signaling management’s confidence that the company’s current valuation does not reflect its long-term growth prospects.
The accelerated buyback program comes as Tencent faces growing investor pressure over the pace at which its substantial investments in artificial intelligence will translate into meaningful revenue and earnings growth. Although the company continues expanding its AI capabilities, investors have increasingly shifted their attention toward pure-play AI firms, leaving established internet companies under pressure.
Buyback Spending Reaches Highest Level This Year
Tencent has sharply increased the pace of its share repurchases in recent weeks.
The company is expected to spend more than HK$9 billion on buybacks during June, making it its largest monthly repurchase program of 2026. Daily buybacks have become a regular feature since mid-May as management attempts to support the stock during one of its longest periods of sustained weakness in years.
Share buybacks reduce the number of outstanding shares, often improving earnings per share while signaling that management believes the stock is undervalued. Investors generally view large repurchase programs as a sign of confidence in a company’s future prospects.
AI Investments Remain Under Investor Scrutiny
A major reason behind Tencent’s recent share price weakness is uncertainty surrounding its aggressive investment in artificial intelligence.
Earlier this year, the company announced plans to invest more than 36 billion yuan in AI development during 2026, more than doubling previous spending levels. Those investments include AI infrastructure, cloud computing, advanced language models, and new artificial intelligence services integrated into its products.
While investors acknowledge the long-term potential of AI, many remain unconvinced about when these investments will begin generating significant financial returns. The absence of immediate monetization has contributed to weaker market sentiment despite Tencent’s continued technological progress.
WeChat AI Strategy Takes Center Stage
Tencent is increasingly relying on WeChat, China’s largest social media and messaging platform, to commercialize its AI technologies.
The company has begun testing an AI assistant within WeChat as part of a broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence into messaging, search, payments, and business services. With more than one billion users, WeChat offers Tencent a unique platform for introducing AI-powered features at massive scale.
Executives believe successfully embedding AI across WeChat’s ecosystem could create new revenue opportunities while strengthening user engagement. However, investors continue waiting for clearer evidence that these initiatives will materially improve financial performance.
Valuation Falls to Historic Lows
Tencent’s prolonged share price decline has pushed its valuation to one of the lowest levels in the company’s history.
The stock is now trading at approximately 11 times forward earnings, well below many global technology peers. Analysts note that Tencent’s valuation has fallen to levels typically associated with mature businesses rather than one of China’s largest technology companies.
Despite the lower valuation, investors remain cautious due to concerns about slowing revenue growth, increasing AI-related spending, and continued competition within China’s technology sector. The company’s most recent quarterly results also showed its slowest revenue growth in six quarters, adding to market concerns.
Chinese Internet Stocks Face Broader Selling Pressure
Tencent’s challenges reflect a wider trend affecting China’s leading internet companies.
Large technology firms such as Alibaba and Meituan have also experienced significant share price declines this year as investors rotate toward companies focused exclusively on artificial intelligence infrastructure and AI model development.
In addition, mainland Chinese investors, who previously provided strong support for Tencent shares, have become net sellers for several consecutive months, contributing to continued downward pressure on the stock. Market analysts believe improving investor confidence will depend largely on companies demonstrating tangible financial returns from their AI investments.
Buybacks Signal Confidence Despite Market Challenges
Tencent’s expanded buyback program highlights management’s belief that the company’s long-term value remains stronger than its current market price suggests.
By returning capital to shareholders while continuing heavy investment in artificial intelligence, Tencent is attempting to balance short-term shareholder expectations with long-term technological ambitions. The success of that strategy will largely depend on whether the company can convert its AI investments into sustainable revenue growth and stronger profitability.
For now, investors are expected to closely monitor Tencent’s upcoming earnings reports, progress in AI commercialization, and continued share repurchase activity as key indicators of the company’s future direction. With competition intensifying across China’s technology sector, Tencent’s ability to restore investor confidence could determine whether its stock recovers from one of the largest market value declines in its history.
