Huawei and Apple Gain Market Share in China as Memory Chip Shortage Hits Rivals

Stable Pricing Strategy Helps Tech Giants Outperform Amid Rising Component Costs

Huawei and Apple strengthened their positions in China’s smartphone market during the second quarter of 2026 as a global memory chip shortage pushed up production costs for many Android manufacturers.

According to market research firm IDC, both companies gained market share by keeping prices relatively stable while several competitors raised prices or cut production in response to soaring memory costs.

Memory Shortage Reshapes Smartphone Market

China’s smartphone market continued to face headwinds during the second quarter.

IDC reported that:

  • Smartphone shipments fell 4.3% year-over-year.
  • Total shipments declined to approximately 66 million units.
  • The market recorded its fifth consecutive quarterly decline.
  • Rising memory chip costs pressured manufacturers.
  • Consumer demand weakened as handset prices increased.

Huawei and Apple Outperform Rivals

Despite the challenging market, Huawei and Apple posted strong shipment growth by avoiding major price increases.

According to IDC:

  • Huawei’s shipments increased by 19.4%.
  • Apple’s shipments rose 24.4%.
  • Huawei captured 22.6% of China’s smartphone market.
  • Apple secured an 18.1% market share.
  • Both companies benefited from resilient demand for premium devices.

Android Rivals Face Greater Pressure

Many Android smartphone makers struggled as higher component prices squeezed profit margins.

Several manufacturers responded by:

  • Raising smartphone prices
  • Reducing production of budget models
  • Limiting promotional discounts
  • Tightening inventory management
  • Prioritizing higher-margin devices

These measures contributed to weaker shipments across much of the Android market.

Consumer Preferences Shift

IDC analysts noted that Chinese consumers increasingly favored brands that maintained stable pricing during a period of economic uncertainty.

Factors influencing purchasing decisions included:

  • Price stability
  • Brand reputation
  • Premium product quality
  • Reliable availability
  • Long-term value

This trend helped Huawei and Apple attract buyers despite an overall decline in market demand.

AI Boom Continues to Pressure Memory Supply

The global shortage of DRAM and NAND memory chips has been fueled largely by surging demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers.

The supply crunch has resulted in:

  • Higher memory prices
  • Increased smartphone production costs
  • Reduced device shipments
  • Pressure on manufacturer margins
  • Continued uncertainty across the electronics industry.

Outlook Remains Challenging

Industry analysts expect the memory shortage to continue influencing smartphone production and pricing throughout the year.

Manufacturers are expected to focus on:

  • Managing component costs
  • Securing memory supplies
  • Protecting profit margins
  • Premium product launches
  • Supply chain resilience

Companies able to maintain competitive pricing may continue to gain market share as consumers become increasingly price-conscious.

Looking Ahead

Huawei and Apple have emerged as two of the biggest beneficiaries of China’s ongoing memory chip shortage, using stable pricing and strong brand loyalty to outperform rivals in a weakening smartphone market. While the broader industry continues to grapple with rising component costs and lower shipments, both companies appear well positioned to strengthen their market positions if supply constraints persist.
