Russia launched an intense overnight barrage of ballistic missiles and drones on Kyiv early Saturday, killing at least nine people and wounding dozens more, in the second major attack on Ukraine’s capital within a single week.
A Night of Explosions Across the City
More than a dozen explosions reverberated through Kyiv during the assault, according to Reuters witnesses on the ground, as Russia combined ballistic missiles with drone strikes across multiple districts of the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 28 people were wounded, including four children, while emergency services reported the Darnytskyi District bore the brunt of the casualties, with seven people killed and 14 injured after the attack sparked fires and damaged houses, vehicles, and both administrative and non-residential buildings.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a residential building was partially destroyed, its first and second floors collapsing and trapping residents inside. Emergency crews worked to extinguish fires in a separate non-residential building nearby, while damage to commercial and residential structures was reported in two additional city districts. Klitschko said nearly 6,000 residential buildings across the city had lost heating as a result of the strikes, while a large portion of Kyiv also lost running water.
The Second Major Strike This Week
Saturday’s attack came just two days after an earlier major assault on Ukraine killed at least 10 people and injured more than 50 others nationwide, including six members of a single family killed near Kryvyi Rih. That earlier strike also involved a suspected Russian cruise missile that landed in Poland during the broader attack, an incident that added fresh alarm for NATO members bordering the conflict.
Russia’s Defense Ministry described Saturday’s assault as a “massive strike” targeting “Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities and logistics centers in Kyiv,” and separately claimed its forces had hit military and energy facilities in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure. Russia’s military disputed reports it had struck the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, insisting its forces had only targeted Ukrainian defense companies.
Ukraine’s Chronic Air Defense Shortage
The attacks underscore Kyiv’s persistent shortage of the Western-supplied interceptor systems needed to counter Russia’s ballistic missiles, which travel at several times the speed of sound and are considerably harder to shoot down than slower-moving drones. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described it as “a hell of a night in Kyiv,” writing on social media that “failing to achieve its goals on the battlefield, Russia is intensifying its air attacks and terror against civilians,” while renewing calls for additional air and missile defense systems and interceptors.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pressing the United States and other Western partners for months over Ukraine’s urgent need for more Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems. Complicating that push, President Donald Trump said Friday that talks over granting Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles domestically remained ongoing but had not yet been finalized, despite earlier indications he had agreed to the arrangement. “You have to be very judicious, but you have to be very careful about letting somebody build them,” Trump said.
A War Grinding Toward Its Fifth Year
The renewed bombardment comes as the broader war approaches its fourth anniversary with fighting still raging along more than 1,200 kilometers of frontline, even as the pace of Russian territorial advances has slowed by more than half compared with earlier phases of the conflict. In retaliation for the intensified missile campaign, Ukraine has stepped up its own long-range strikes on Russian territory, focusing primarily on oil depots and energy infrastructure deep inside Russia.
The relentless cycle of strikes and counterstrikes continues to dim prospects for a near-term diplomatic resolution, even as both sides periodically signal openness to negotiations. With Russia apparently seeking to exploit Kyiv’s air defense gaps and Ukraine pressing Western allies for faster military support, the conflict shows little sign of the kind of sustained de-escalation that would be needed to open a genuine path toward peace talks.
