Major Drone Attack Targets Russian Energy Infrastructure. Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow and surrounding regions, striking a key oil refinery for the second time in a week and escalating pressure on Russia’s energy sector as the war enters a new phase. Russian officials reported multiple injuries and damage to infrastructure following the overnight assault.
The attack targeted the Moscow oil refinery in the Kapotnya district, a major supplier of fuel to the Russian capital. Thick smoke and fires were reported at the facility as Ukrainian forces continued their campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure.
Refinery Hit Again Amid Growing Energy Pressure
The strike marked the second attack on the Moscow refinery within days, highlighting Ukraine’s growing ability to reach strategic targets deep inside Russian territory.
Industry sources previously reported that an earlier drone attack damaged critical refining equipment and temporarily disrupted operations at the facility. The refinery plays a significant role in supplying gasoline and diesel to the Moscow region.
Ukraine has increasingly focused on energy infrastructure as part of its strategy to weaken Russia’s economic and military capabilities. Refineries, fuel depots and energy facilities across Russia have been targeted throughout 2026.
Moscow Reports Injuries and Airport Disruptions
Russian authorities said dozens of drones were launched toward Moscow and nearby areas, causing injuries and damage to residential and commercial buildings.
Officials reported that at least 16 people were injured during the attack. Moscow’s airports temporarily suspended operations as air defense systems responded to incoming drones across the region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed hundreds of drones were intercepted nationwide, although the scale of the attack demonstrated Ukraine’s increasing long-range strike capabilities.
Zelensky Issues Warning to Moscow
Following the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the strikes and warned that Russia would continue to face consequences if missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities persist.
Zelensky said Ukraine’s actions were a response to ongoing Russian assaults and called on Western allies to increase pressure on Moscow through additional sanctions and military support.
War Enters New Strategic Phase
Military analysts say the conflict is increasingly shifting toward long-range drone warfare, with both sides targeting critical infrastructure far from the front lines.
Ukraine’s growing drone capabilities have allowed it to strike energy facilities, transportation hubs and industrial sites across Russia, creating new challenges for Moscow’s air defenses. Russia, meanwhile, continues to launch large-scale missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Energy Markets and Security Concerns Rise
The latest attack is likely to renew concerns about energy security and fuel supplies within Russia. Repeated strikes on refineries have already contributed to disruptions in fuel production and distribution in several regions.
As both sides continue to intensify their use of drones, analysts warn that attacks on critical infrastructure could become an increasingly important factor in the broader conflict. The latest strike on Moscow’s refinery demonstrates that neither side appears ready to reduce military pressure despite ongoing international calls for peace negotiations.
