Major Nor’easter Forecast to Hit the East Coast

On Monday, February 23, 2026, the U.S. East Coast is in the grip of a historic Nor’easter, with over 40 million people currently under blizzard warnings. This “Category 4 Major” winter storm has intensified into a massive system, prompting travel bans, widespread school closures, and a state of emergency across New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

City-by-City Forecast & Accumulations

The storm is expected to be the most powerful to hit the I-95 corridor in nearly a decade, with snow falling at rates of 2–3 inches per hour in the hardest-hit zones.

CityForecasted SnowfallStatus & Travel Alerts
New York City12–18″ (Up to 24″ possible)Full Travel Ban in effect; first blizzard warning in 9 years.
Boston18–24″Snow Emergency declared; wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Philadelphia12–18″Snow Emergency; blizzard conditions along the coast.
Long Island18–24″+Direct “eye of the storm” according to Gov. Hochul.
Washington D.C.1–4″Lower totals as the storm pulls cold air from the north.

The “Triple Threat”: Wind, Snow, and Flooding

Meteorologists have described this system as a “classic” Nor’easter that underwent bombogenesis (rapid intensification) over the Atlantic.

  • Extreme Winds: Coastal gusts are reaching 60–70 mph, leading to whiteout conditions and the high risk of downed trees and power lines. As of 5:00 AM, nearly 300,000 homes are without power, primarily in New Jersey and Delaware.

  • Coastal Flooding: A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect. Inundation of 1.5 to 2.5 feet is expected during high tide cycles, specifically affecting the Jersey Shore, Long Island, and the Massachusetts coast.

  • “Heavy Wet” Snow: Unlike the dry snow seen earlier this year, this accumulation is heavy and saturated. This increases the weight on utility wires and makes manual shoveling dangerous for those with underlying health conditions.

Logistics and Travel Disruptions

  • Aviation: Thousands of flights have been canceled across JFK, LGA, EWR, and BOS. Major international carriers including Emirates, Etihad, and Air India have suspended all operations to the Northeast for February 23.

  • Ground Transit: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has ordered all bridges and highways closed to non-emergency vehicles until at least noon today. SEPTA and NJ Transit are reporting widespread suspensions.

  • Education: Every major school district from Philadelphia to Boston, including Boston Public Schools and NYC Public Schools, has shifted to virtual learning or closed entirely.
